Maintenance & Upkeep

Maintenance & Operations Services

Facilities Maintenance & Operations works daily to maintain the campus's academic and classroom facilities. Our team is a mix of multi-skilled, multi-talented trades personnel who are experienced in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, locksmithing, and more. The Building Service Engineers are responsible for maintaining all mechanical equipment related to the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration trades; as well as ensuring that the campus's alarm systems are all in working order.

Electrical

Electrical Systems & Distribution
Facilities Management electricians maintain building electrical equipment, distribution systems, and lighting control systems. We also install and modify new and existing electrical circuits in existing spaces. Additionally, we consult with campus departments on power requirements for new equipment and electrical services for many campus events.

Alarms
​Facilities Management alarm technicians install and maintain fire alarm, card access, environmental alarm, security alarm, and CCTV systems.

Lighting
​Facilities Management lighting technicians install, repair and maintain interior and exterior lighting fixtures throughout campus classrooms, laboratories, greenhouses, roads and walkways. This includes disposal of hazardous waste generated by lamp and ballast replacement.

​Emergency power
​We maintain an array of backup generators which provide emergency power for critical systems during electrical outages.

Structural

Carpentry
Our skilled carpenters meet the requirements of our university’s diverse research, teaching and support services departments. We combine quality craftsmanship with the latest technologies and materials to fulfill remodeling, repair, and renovation projects.

Locks
Our experienced locksmith installs and maintains high security keying systems, electronic locking systems, electromagnetic locking systems, and mechanical locks. For more information regarding keys and access cards, please click here.

Painting
Our team of expert painters are committed to quality work and customer service. We do interior and exterior painting with latex and low and no VOC products. We are also responsible for graffiti removal.

Flooring
Our accomplished flooring team covers all types of patching, repairs and installation of carpet, vinyl composite tiles, epoxy sanded and non-sanded flooring along with concrete slabs and other quality flooring products.

Roofing
Our knowledgeable roofing team provides roofing services that include roof repair, re-roofing, and new roofing installation of any type of roof system. We also provide inspection service for existing roofs, waterproofing and cleaning of roof drains, roof gutters, and downspouts.

Plumbing

Plumbing Systems and Distribution
​We install, modify, update and maintain all of the plumbing systems. These systems are industrial hot and cold water systems, domestic hot and cold water systems, lab vacuum, safety shower and eye wash stations, reverse osmosis, deionized water, natural gas, compressed lab air, high air pressure, control air systems, sanitary sewer systems, lift stations, storm drain systems, greenhouse cooling systems, vacuum, air, and water treatment such as water softeners, etc. We also maintain fire sprinklers, testing and corrections, backflow preventers testing and repairs.

Drinking Water and Water Quality
The campus receives its high quality domestic water from the City of Arcata's municipal water system, which is supplied by the Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District's Mad River Water System. The City of Arcata regularly publishes Water Quality/Consumer Confidence reports.

Mechanical & HVAC

Elevators
Facilities Management coordinates elevator repair on the campus, including preventive maintenance and emergency response.

Fume hoods
Perform all periodic maintenance and testing as well as install new systems. Routine fume hood maintenance includes testing and repair of exhaust systems, in-hood lighting, sash operation, and low-airflow alarms. We regularly check and record fume hood air flow velocities to ensure operator safety and regulatory compliance.

Lab and research support systems
Our skilled engineers can maintain and repair a variety of the campus' lab equipment and research support systems. We have expertise with controlled-environment growth chambers, ultra-low temperature freezers, aquaculture and fish hatchery systems, greenhouse lighting and ventilation systems, humidification, steam generation, and advanced air and water filtration.

Provide infrastructure to support lab equipment
We supply the infrastructure and utilities needed to operate campus lab equipment. Utilities provided include: electricity, natural gas, purified water, compressed air, and vacuum.

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning)
​We are responsible for maintaining all mechanical equipment related to the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration trades. We service a wide variety of equipment ranging from package a/c units, chillers, gas heaters, walk in boxes, ultra low temperature freezers, supply, return, exhaust fans, and fancoils. We perform both corrective and routine preventative maintenance checks on all of our equipment. We repair and install new HVAC equipment for better temperature control and energy efficiency. We can also make scheduling and temperature changes upon request.

Vehicle Maintenance

Facilities Management is responsible for maintaining vehicles, recording services and reporting to appropriate state agencies for all University vehicles.  University, Department vehicles are scheduled for preventative maintenance when appropriate, which is performed in the Facilties Management auto shop.
