Living-Learning Community Housing

Eligibility: First-Year Students Only- Botany, Biology & Zoology Majors

This residence option is for Biology, Botany, and Zoology majors in the Among Giants program. Residents will share living spaces and experience special programmatic activities focused around their majors that support the courses they are enrolled in.

Eligibility: First-Year Students Only - Environmental Resources Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering Majors

This residence option is for Environmental Resources Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Energy Systems Engineering majors in the Baduwa’t to Bay program. Residents will share living spaces and experience special programmatic activities focused around their majors that support the courses they are enrolled in.

This residence option is for Liberal Studies Elementary Education (LSEE) and Child Development majors in the Educators for Social Justice program. This community is for Marine Biology and Oceanography majors in the Rising Tides program. Residents will share living spaces and experience special programmatic activities focused around their majors that support the courses they are enrolled in.

This community is for Chemistry, Geology, Physical Science, and Physics & Astronomy Majors in the Stars to Rocks program. Residents will share living spaces and experience special programmatic activities focused around their majors that support the courses they are enrolled in.

Eligibility: Transfer & Continuing Students Only

The Academic Intensive Living community provides an atmosphere encouraging scholastic achievement and respect for individual academic goals. Residents living in Academic Intensive observe daily quiet hours from 10:00pm-10:00am. Extended community quiet hours help to create an environment conducive to studying and sleeping.

Eligibility: First-Year Students Only

Indoor Adventure is a community focused on the common interests of video gaming, other gaming, anime, and comic books. It will bring together individuals who want to share these passions with others in a supportive community setting that establishes a balance between the virtual world and real world responsibilities (e.g., academics and personal connections). Residents within the Indoor Adventure community will have the opportunity to network with various on-campus organizations, including the Committee on Resident Entertainment & Gaming (CORE-G). Open to video gaming, other gaming, anime, comic books and other types of gaming.

Eligibility: Open to all students - Approval Required

Designed for students who share an interest in regenerating cultural values, traditions, and customs rooted in the experiences, histories, and multidimensional identities of those who do and do not identify as Latinx. It’s also designed to be a space where students feel connected and supported in a community centered on the experiences and heritage of the Latinx people. Prospective residents must complete supplemental questions in their Housing application regarding their interest in this community; admittance will be contingent upon the responses to these questions.

Native American Living is a community interested in an environment that affirms Native American culture, current issues, language, and history. Residents will have the opportunity to participate in local activities with local tribal communities and agencies to build a community that provides academic and personal support. Humboldt Native American staff members advise this special interest area. Prospective residents must complete supplemental questions in their Housing application regarding their interest in this community; admittance will be contingent upon the responses to these questions.

Eligibility: First-Year Students Only

In collaboration with on-campus partners Center Activities, Outdoor Adventure & Recreation (OAR) residents participate in a series of outdoor adventure trips throughout the year to establish community and build lasting friendships. Past adventure trips include: sea kayaking, rock climbing, river rafting, surfing and backpacking. The success of the OAR community is due to the students who participate and their passion for outdoor activities. 

Eligibility: Open to all students - Approval Required

A gender-inclusive living community that affirms the cultural experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, non-identifying, and questioning residents, and their allies. Students are paired regardless of sex or gender identity. Prospective residents must complete supplemental questions in their Housing application regarding their interests in this community; admittance will be contingent upon the responses to these questions.

Sankofa House is a living community intended for students with an interest in exploring Black culture, history, identity, and African diasporic intellectual traditions. Sankofa is a West African term that communicates the importance of reaching back or retrieving one’s past, to better prepare for the future, and is a symbol frequently used in African American cultural ceremonies. Sankofa House is designed to intentionally create a space for students to feel connected and supported in a community centered on the experiences and heritage of Black/African people. Sankofa House is not for Black people, but it is about Black culture. Sankofa House is a collaboration between Housing & Residence Life and the Umoja Center for Pan African Student Excellence. Prospective residents must complete supplemental questions in their Housing application regarding their interest in this community; admittance will be contingent upon the responses to these questions.

The Students for Violence Prevention (SVP) living community centralizes the importance of community, consent, respect, and supporting one another. It is intended to support students as they develop skills to change the culture of violence. Anchored by the award-winning student bystander intervention movement CHECK IT, this program offers students the chance to develop skills in violence prevention, build community, and take meaningful courses with faculty that care about students, their well-being, and social justice.
