Submit Ideas for New Academic Programs

Charge

Academic Programs will report on existing programming in four areas at HSU (Science, Applied Science, Engineering, and Technology) and create a phased plan to have at least three degree programs in each of the four areas by 2023 (planned year of the polytechnic designation) as well as report on a plan to add three additional programs across all four areas in 2026 and 2029. The goal is to have at least three degree programs in each of the four areas by 2023 and at least six additional programs across all four areas by 2029.

Considerations for Program Build-Out Include:

  • Identification of Existing Programming in each of the Four Areas (existing)
    • Science
    • Technology
    • Engineering
    • Applied Sciences
  • Recommendations for a phased approach and build out to 2023 (designation); 2026 (operating); 2029 (thriving) with considerations for:
    • Alignment with HSU Vision and Values
    • Community Support and Academic partnerships
      • E.g. College of the Redwoods, community colleges, other CSUs, local tribes etc.
      • Specialty accreditation (existing and future)
    • Student demand (in part based on Cal Poly-SLO and Cal Poly-Pomona programming and limitations to accepting students)
    • Workforce Needs Assessment (locally, regionally, state-wide, nationally)
    • Unique strengths of our location
    • Demonstration of commitment to inclusive STEM education and diverse student success
    • Integration of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Community Cultural Knowledge (HSI/MSI)

Facilities Working Group

Charge

Create a prospectus section focused on existing HSU infrastructure, facilities, and related resources and identify/recommend additional space necessary to achieve polytechnic status. When considering “space” think beyond HSU campus space including virtual/online space, space in partnership with two and four year institutions, and space within and beyond Humboldt County. Other Considerations:

  • Dedicated buildings/instructional and lab space appropriate for sustaining the engineering programs and other STEM majors
  • Residence hall space as well as student support services (current and future with potential growth)
  • Space utilization in the community, with partners, College of the Redwoods, Tribes, and across and outside of Humboldt County.
  • Facility access in Del Norte County and Trinity County (if any)
  • All existing facilities and pathways to future facilities
  • Campus infrastructure sufficiency to support faculty efforts including 17 centers/institutes as well as the Coral Sea.

Inclusive Student Success Working Group

Tell the story of how HSU will incorporate principles, programs, and practice with regards to inclusive student success as we move toward a polytechnic designation. Please speak to the following areas (but do not feel limited by these areas):

  • STEM (polytechnic) majors at HSU: relative %
  • A pathway to growth of STEM (poly) majors equivalent in percent to Cal Poly-SLO and Cal Poly-Pomona WITHOUT decreasing non-STEM majors.
  • Student demographic information (BIPOC, first-generation, Pell-eligible)

To put forward two university name recommendations incorporating the word “polytechnic” after engaging input from students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members, and all other stakeholders you deem are valuable to contributing to well-informed, sound recommendations. Considerations include:

  • reflection of the uniqueness of HSU and our approach to a comprehensive Cal Poly
  • history and meaning of HSU
  • our collective strategic vision for the future

Business Plan Working Group

Describe HSU’s current budget picture, the steps we are taking to address budget realignment, and create a polytechnic business plan that demonstrates how HSU can support the additional components necessary to achieve the polytechnic designation. Considerations include:

  • Current budget projection and planning for realignment
  • Pro Forma development demonstrating a plan for associated costs to meet the polytechnic designation in 2023 (and continued phasing through 2029).
  • Modest admissions growth plan
  • Faculty, staff, programming equipment needs
  • Residence Halls, dining, student support services

Cross-Disciplinary Integration and Role of the Liberal Arts Working Group

To develop the prospectus section of the self-study document that documents our existing strengths and our new opportunities as a comprehensive polytechnic university in the liberal arts and in interdisciplinary collaboration. To create a model vision for the role of the liberal arts, the infusion of the liberal arts in multidisciplinary teams, and other cross-disciplinary integration. Considerations include:

  • Unique strengths of HSU in liberal arts/humanities
  • Existing integration of STEM and liberal arts - key partnerships and future opportunities
  • 21st Century Polytechnic description(s)
  • Social Justice and social advocacy frame
  • Interdisciplinary strengths and future opportunities
  • Selected courses/courses of study that demonstrate commitments/criteria
  • Local tribal influence/partnerships - interdisciplinary framework

Provide information on fundraising, grant activity, community engagement, and the integration of industry/community in academic programming relevant to the polytechnic designation as described below.

    • Faculty productivity in obtaining grants and HSU’s equivalency or pathway to equivalency of production at CSU-SLO and CSU-Pomona
      • HSU ranks 7th highest in Total Awarded (based on a three year average)
      • HSU ranks 8th highest # Proposals Submitted; tied with Fullerton (based on a three year average)
      • HSU received the highest total awarded when compared to the other two Cal Poly campuses based on a three year average

    • Unique regional profile which may include but not limited to:
