Here's how:

  1. Reach out directly to Sustainability Staff and submit resume and cover letter to indicate your interest
  2. Get an understanding about current project opportunities that are available via an in-person meeting with Sustainability Staff
  3. Get matched to a project by Sustainability Staff
  4. Receive a permission number to enroll in the course by the add deadline from Sustainability Staff
  5. Develop a workplan with your assigned mentor

*Note: Even though your adviser might suggest you work with the Sustainability Office for your internship, you still need to directly interface with Sustainability Staff before enrolling. Also, your adviser/professor should not give you a permission number to do your internship with the Office of Sustainability, instead you will need to receive this info from the Office directly.

Practitioners Directory

We live in an area with a large and diverse community of professionals working within the intersection of critical economic, social and environmental challenges. The Office of Sustainability, along with the Centers for Community Based Learning and Academic and Career Advising, have published the 2023/24 Directory of Sustainability Practitioners as a resource for Cal Poly Humboldt faculty and students to find local professionals willing and able to share their expertise inside and outside the classroom.

How was the Directory Made?

The first Directory was published in 2019, after we surveyed faculty on their interests in working with community members and how local sustainability practitioners could best interact with their students – as project mentors, guest lecturers, tour guides, or in other ways ‐ to support learning inside and outside the classroom. We contact local professionals and ask them to also complete a questionnaire about working with Cal Poly Humboldt faculty and students (either in person or virtually). Listed here are professionals who have responded to our questionnaires.

How to Use the Directory

The Directory is organized according to many of the fields within sustainability, from Food Systems, to Tribal Lands, to Waste Reduction. Find your field(s) of interest, review the professionals working in that field and what level of participation they are willing to provide, and then contact those professionals.
