Humboldt-ESCALA Professional Learning Community (HEPLC)
Cal Poly Humboldt adopted the practice of using Professional Learning Communities to focus on sustaining the institution's status as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). This page highlights the professional development work that Humboldt faculty, staff, and administrators have done in collaboration with ESCALA Educational Services Inc.
A collaboration to build institutional capacity at HSU as an HSI, and equitable, culturally responsive learning for HSU students Humboldt State University (HSU) students come to campus with an abundance of cultural wealth. The collaboration between HSU and ESCALA Educational Services is designed to assist HSU faculty, staff, and administrators in removing barriers to inclusive student success, in order to foster environments that will allow the full spectrum of assets of HSU’s diverse student body to be fully recognized in their academic experiences. ESCALA Educational Services is a national provider of programming focused on culturally responsive pedagogy and equitable practices for Hispanic Serving Institutions and has worked closely with HSU since 2018 on developing long-term, sustainable faculty, and staff programming.
Professional Development and Engagement with ESCALA
The following information represents the commitment, hard work, and dedication put in by Humboldt faculty, staff, and administrators throughout the collaborative partnership.
- 110+ hours of professional development, engagement, and facilitation have occurred with ESCALA
- 280+ Humboldt staff, faculty, and administrators attended an ESCALA event
- 10 alumni serve on Humboldt's HSI Subcommittee
- 8 alumni have been trained to serve as faculty peer coaches for ESCALA
- 7 alumni serve as facilitators and coaches for the ESCALA informed on-campus pilot, Creando Conciencia: Empowering Hispanic Learning at Humboldt
- 6 faculty have participated in the ESCALA STEM Mini-Course
- 4 alumni have been certified to facilitate ESCALA national programs
- 3 faculty have served as equity fellows for the greater Cal Poly Humboldt campus

Creando Conciencia - Empowering Hispanic Learning at Humboldt
A cross-disciplinary, professional learning community (PLC) composed of Humboldt faculty and staff. The focus of this cross-disciplinary, PLC is to explore, study, and reflect on specific topics and practices associated with culturally sustaining teaching and learning with particular attention to Latinx populations.
