Danielle Witten's CATE Workshop

Redwood Writing Project Teacher Consultant Danielle Witten will present a session at CATE in November. This session is a timely workshop that addresses the skin of reading texts critically, interrogating them for elements of colonial mindsets and erasure that distort Indigenous peoples and histories. This session will begin with an overview of how Danielle developed a tool (based on the work of Deborah Appleman) for examining texts through an Indigenous lens. However, our reading should not stop there; an essential action is praxis – taking steps to combat erasure and surface the silences in texts by surfacing and incorporating Indigenous voices, histories, and perspectives. Attendees will have hands-on time to practice using the tool, as well as an opportunity to explore a unit plan and rich resources.
