Steve Hackett

Economics

Steve Hackett has had his paper, titled "Economic Attributes of Stayers and Leavers in Four California Fisheries," published in California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations Report Volume 56 (2015). This work made use of undergraduate research assistants Brett Poirier and Nate Freney from the Department of Economics, and was co-authored with Dr. Ana Pitchon (SJSU) and Doreen Hansen (research associate).

HSU's Business Internship program will be honored at the Arcata Economic Development Corporation's Spotlight on Success event Tuesday, March 31 at the Arcata Theater Lounge. The free event includes an opportunity to learn about small businesses that the local economy, and organizations that provide business support to local entrepreneurs.

William Reynolds

Psychology

Psychology Professor William Reynolds has received a lifetime achievement award from the American Psychological Association. The award is granted to those who demonstrate a sustained program of scholarship of exceptional quality throughout their career. For the past 32 years, Reynolds' research has focused in part on developing methods and procedures to assist school psychologists in catching students before they fall in life-threatening ways.

Tasha Howe

Psychology

Psychology Professor Tasha Howe recently received a 2014-15 Fulbright scholarship to Croatia. Her project is titled "Child Abuse Prevention in Post-Conflict Communities."

This is Howe's second Fulbright award. In 2008, she worked on domestic violence in Cyprus, another post-conflict country.

B.J. Malekzadeh

Business

Business student B.J. Malekzadeh recently took second place in the Business Future Four Regional Competition in Chico, Calif. April 11. The other schools competing were Chico State, Sonoma State and Sacramento State. Malekzadeh from won for his innovative idea that proposes a better tourniquet than what is currently available for civilian and military use. He got this idea while serving in the military.

Psychology

Psychology professor Tasha Howe was recently interviewed for a Parents Magazine article examining the milestones of being a new mom. In the article, Howe discusses common situations that new parents face such as making emergency doctors calls and documenting your baby's biggest moments. Professor Howe and Dr. Howard S. Friedman from UC Riverside recently published an article in the journal Sexuality and Culture. The article is entitled, "Sex and Gender in the 1980s heavy metal scene: Groupies, musicians, and fans recall their experiences."

Dr. Howe presented two invited addresses at the International Conference on Child and Family Maltreatment in San Diego. The talks, which occurred in two parts (theoretical and applied), were entitled, "Neurodevelopmental Versus Traditional Clinical Approaches to the Assessment and Treatment of Childhood Psychopathology."

Economics professor Erick Eschker was featured in the Jan. 23 "Atlantic" article "How Colleges Are Preparing Students for a Country Where Pot Is Legal." Eschker is co-director of the Humboldt Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research, dedicated to generating high quality research relating to marijuana. Chris Aberson

Psychology

Chris Aberson, Professor of Psychology, will begin a four-year term as Associate Editor of Group Processes and Intergroup Relations (GPIR). GPIR is a scientific social psychology journal dedicated to social psychological processes within and between groups. The journal’s editorial team includes leading scholars in social psychology of intergroup relations from around the world.

Dr. Aberson joins GPIR after a term as Associate Editor for Journal of Applied Social Psychology. He currently holds positions on the editorial boards of Teaching of Psychology and Analyses of Social Issues and Public Policy.
