Humberto Montano

Art + Film

Humberto Montano (Art) has been accepted to the summer 2014 Career Discovery Program at Harvard University, with a full tuition scholarship. His studies will focus on Urban Design. Students spend their time in a stimulating studio environment at the Harvard Graduate School of Design that mirrors a graduate level studio experience. They learn to analyze any challenge from multiple angles, pursuing new ways of thinking and seeking out creative solutions. Humberto will have a chance to work directly with faculty from Harvard's Graduate School of Design and the Rhode Island School of Design as well as notable professionals from the fields of urban design, architecture and planning.

Brandice Guerra

Art + Film

The work of art professor Brandice Guerra is currently featured in “Wunderkammer,” an exhibit at the Science Museum Oklahoma. Guerra’s finely-detailed paintings of animals are displayed in curio cabinets among a collection of specimens preserved through taxidermy or other techniques.

Guerra, who teaches drawing and illustration, joined the HSU faculty in 2010. Her work has previously been featured at nearly 20 exhibits across the U.S., including a showing locally at First Street Gallery in Eureka. Art + Film

Four Humboldt State Art faculty members and President Richmond will be presented with the “Seven Seals Award” by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). The recipients are: Dr. Rollin Richmond, Sondra Schwetman, Nicole Jeane Hill, Sarah Whorf and Julia Alderson.

The awards recognize the professional support provided by the University to Coast Guard Reservist and HSU Art student Melinda Beacon during her short-notice deployment in support of Hurricane Sandy in December 2012.

The presentation will take place at President Richmond’s office at the Humboldt State campus in Siemens Hall.

The Seven Seals Award is an award given by the ESGR, a Department of Defense office established to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers. The award honors significant achievement and professional support provided by an organization or individual that supports the ESGR mission.

David Phelps

Art + Film

David Phelps ('89, Fine/Studio Arts, Ceramics) will be honored October 19 at the 36th annual Stockton Arts Commission Arts Awards ceremony for his sculpture titled “American Beauty." A contemporary American sculptor, Phelps' work appears in large scale public and private installations across the United States. He works primarily in bronze, steel and concrete.

Art + Film

Sondra Schwetman has a piece accepted into the Marin Museum of Contemporary Arts' Summer National Juried Exhibition. The show runs June 1 to July 14th.

Vaughn Hutchins

Art + Film

Vaughn Hutchins, darkroom Tech for the Art Department, is having a one-person show of his photographs in Gallery 1401 at the University of the Arts in Philadephia, Feb. 15 through March 15, 2013. Vaughn will show carbon and platinum prints of the redwoods and Yosemite Valley. He will also give a workshop at the University of the Arts on carbon printing, a 19th Century photographic process. Vaughn is internationally recognized for his work in carbon printing.

Alex Anderson

Art + Film

Studio Art senior Alex Anderson was one of forty students from around the country be included in FUSION, the 2012 Society of North American Goldsmiths Conference Student Exhibition. Anderson has been in the jewelry and small metals program for three years and the honors program for a year and a half. Her work is on display through May 12 at the HSU Annual Juried Student Exhibition.

Nicole Jean Hill and Julie Alderson

Art + Film

Associate Professor Nicole Jean Hill's photography series Artifacts & Incidents is featured in the spring issue of Exposure, the photography journal published by the Society for Photographic Education. Hill's large format color photographs explore human and animal activity along the periphery of rural communities throughout the American West along the boundary between public and private spaces. Assistant Professor Julia Alderson provided the accompanying essay.

The photography series will be exhibited at the Piante Gallery in Eureka from May 4-26 and The Front Gallery in New Orleans from June 9 - July 7.
