Dominique Birdsong

Art + Film

Graduating senior and Honors Painting participant Dominique Birdsong, has been accepted into the MFA program at the Royal College of Art in London, England. The Royal College of Art offers postgraduate degrees to students from over 60 countries and is considered to be the world's leading art and design university, according to a recent international survey. It has also been consistently placed first in the OS World University Rankings. Dominique was accepted into the program through a highly competitive selection process, submitting paintings from her "Trapped" series, paintings that explore issues of identity and loss. Emily Cobb

Emily Cobb recently returned from exhibiting her latest artwork in Sirens: New Work by the JV Collective during Munich Jewellery Week in Germany. Munich Jewellery Week is one of the most significant international events for contemporary jewelers, collectors, gallerists, curators and jewelry artists from around the world. Sirens is an interactive exhibition, and during opening night the podcast Percieved Value recorded several interviews in the gallery space. Listen soon at: https://www.perceivedvaluepodcast.com. The Sirens exhibition will travel to the Baltimore Jewelry Center in Maryland this April and New York City Jewelry Week in November.

Nicole Jean Hill

Professor of Art Nicole Jean Hill was invited by the Center for Prairies Studies at Grinnell College to be an artist-in-residence for the month of March. She is developing a series of photographs and animations about the ecology of the restored and remnant tallgrass prairies at the Conard Environmental Research Area in Kellogg, Iowa.

Professor Nicole Jean Hill was recently awarded Best in Show for her series "Unarmed" as part of a juried documentary exhibition titled "With Our Own Eyes" at the RayKo Photo Center. Benjamin Funke

The Humboldt Arts Council has nominated Benjamin Funke as the Juror for the 22nd Annual Junque Arte Competition and Exhibition at the Morris Graves Museum of Art. The exhibition will run from October 1st to November 27th in the Thonson Gallery & Melvin Schuler Sculpture Garden.

An opening reception will be held October 1st, from 6 to 9 p.m. during First Saturday Night Arts Alive! The exhibition is sponsored by Linda Wise and Recology Humboldt County.

Funke received his B.F.A. from Columbia College, Chicago in 2005 and his M.F.A. from the University of Notre Dame in 2012. He currently works in the Art Department at Humboldt State University.

Benjamin Funke, HSU Art Department lecturer has been selected to exhibit his artwork in a group show at the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art Museum located just outside Seoul, South Korea. The exhibit will feature 3 of his projected video works. The exhibit opens on 4/20/16.

Benjamin Funke, HSU Art Department lecturer has been awarded the Beverly Faben Artist Fund from the Humboldt Arts Council. The Beverly Faben Artist Fund provides support for emerging artists to show their work in established venues.

Marie Campfield

Art + Film

A painting by Marie Campfield, a senior undergraduate student in the Department of Art, was accepted into the Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Exhibition. The exhibition will be held in the galleries of the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators in New York City. Marie is the first HSU student to have a work accepted into this prestigious competition. Approximately 300 works from over 8700 entries were chosen for inclusion. Her work, Child’s Skull, Kandahar Province, is part of a larger series of paintings and drawings informed by her experiences in Afghanistan while serving as an Air Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician (EOD, military bomb squad).
