Education

Sara K. Sterner created and facilitated a Workshop on October 6 for the Minnesota Writing Project Teacher Workshop series. The workshop entitled, White Supremacy in Reading Practices: Exploring Reading Whitely through a Reading Inventory, explored dominant reading experiences through a guided process of self-reflection and discussion. Participants engaged in conversations about texts and white supremacy as a means to promote equity-based literature selection practices that disrupt white supremacy.

Education

HSU and the Humboldt County Office of Education were recently awarded one of five Improvement Research Fellowships, a team-based experience for CSU-District teacher preparation partnerships. The fellowship supports partnership teams to achieve improved program outcomes, build improvement capacity, and build knowledge about how to improve teacher preparation. With support from the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation and the leadership of the CSU Chancellor’s Office for Educator Preparation and Public School Programs, the Humboldt team aims to increase the number of diverse candidates who complete HSU's post-baccalaureate teaching credential program.

On July 21st 2017, Humboldt State University’s Student CTA (SCTA) president, Tina Llopis, was the first local SCTA president to receive a grant and attend the annual CTA President's Conference in San Jose, California. This conference is held annually for the leaders of the California Teacher’s Association to build their leadership skills, hold professional development workshops, inspire member engagement, and unite to overcome challenges that are faced by educators. Llopis, a senior at HSU and newly elected president of the SCTA chapter, received a grant by the Community College Association (CCA), thus being able to foster a connection between CTA and our future educators.

Education Professor Marisol Ruiz recently authored a chapter in the book "Immigration and Schooling: Redefining the 21st Century America" edited by Touorizou Hervé Sommé and Pierre Orelus. The chapter is titled: Why are the Spanish Speakers in the Back of the Room in a Dual Immersion Setting?

Education Faculty Member Marisol Ruiz will present at the American Education Research Association conference for educational research. She will present, "Bilingual school children can think deeper than developmental theorist predict! Readers theater for critical pedagogical literacy." Her article was also recently published in the edited book "Interrogating critical pedagogy: The voices of educators of color in the movement. New York, NY: Routledge.

David Ellerd and Peggy Kirkpatrick

Education

David Ellerd and Peggy Kirkpatrick delivered a presentation on “Rural Partnerships: Special Education Teacher Preparation in Humboldt County.” This invited presentation was delivered to a special delegation of physicians and teachers from Siberia, Russia. The focus was to provide information about state and local requirements for Special Education teacher credentialing to educate children and young adults with disabilities. The event was sponsored by Humboldt County of Education (HCOE) on April 1, 2014.

David Ellerd delivered a presentation on “Rural Partnerships in Teacher Preparation: The Development of a Reading Clinic to add Consistency in Fieldwork Instructional Experiences.” This peer-reviewed presentation was delivered at the 33rd annual conference of the American Council on Rural Special Education, held in Tucson, Arizona, March 19-22, 2014. The focus of this national conference was on developing partnerships to meet individual needs across rural and urban cultural contexts.
