Mike Margolies

Kinesiology, 1976

Mike Margolies, 1976 Kinesiology & Recreation Administration, moved to Dallas Texas in 2015 to work with Mental Training, Inc., and in 2016 he was appointed Chief Operating Officer of the company. The company trains athletes, performing artists, and executives around the world to be mentally tough. Margolies writes, “I owe my entire career start to the education I received at HSU.”

Peter Cowper

Business Administration, 1971

Peter Cowper, 1971 Business, has served as a member of the board of directors of the Sequoia Riverlands Trust since 2013. The trust is a regional nonprofit land trust accredited by the Land Trust Alliance, which is dedicated to strengthening California's heartland and the natural and agricultural legacy of the southern Sierra Nevada and San Joaquin Valley.

Kay Sinclair

Business Administration, 1983

Kay Sinclair, 1983, Master’s of Business Administration, recently left a 30-plus-year career as an IT manager with General Electric/Martin Marietta/Lockheed Martin, in Utica, NY. She has been teaching IT related management courses at State University of New York Polytechnic Institute as an adjunct professor, while also continuing her nonprofit work in the community. Sinclair is currently the president of the board at the Women’s Employment and Resource Center. She is also involved in STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art and Math) activities in the area, including co-teaching summer workshops for middle school students such as 3D Daze for Girls and Nanotechnology. This April, Kay was delighted to receive the Unsung Heroine Award from the Young Women's Christian Association of the Mohawk Valley at its annual Salute to Outstanding Women luncheon. The Unsung Heroine award honors “an individual who works continuously and tirelessly behind the scenes, goes the extra mile with little thanks, or has made an outstanding contribution.”

April Alexander

Social WorkMaster's of Social Work, 2015 and 2016

April Alexander, 2015 Social Work and 2016 Master’s of Social Work, is a Clinical Social Worker at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Eureka. She recently presented at the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) 33rd National Oncology Conference. Alexander’s presentation, “Rural Chemotherapy Clinic Student Volunteer Support Program,” was a program she designed and implemented in collaboration with the HSU Social Work Department in the infusion clinic at St. Joseph Hospital’s Cancer Program to better serve the patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment and to support the medical staff in the clinic. The conference was attended by more than 600 cancer care professionals from across the country.

Rick M. Gardner

Psychology, 1965

Rick M. Gardner, 1965 Psychology, received his M.A. (1967) and Ph.D. (1969) from University of Nevada, Reno in experimental psychology. He served as Professor and Department Chair at the University of Southern Colorado from 1969 to 1991, and later as Professor and Department Chair at the University of Colorado, Denver, from 1991 to 2000. Gardner has published extensively in several areas of psychology with particular emphasis on the topic of body image. He retired in 2003 and has travelled extensively in 90 countries.

Carol Taylor

Business AdministrationMinor - Single Subject Teacher Prep, 1993

Carol Taylor, 1993 Business & Teaching Credential, is currently Vice President of the Sonoma Valley Democrats, Vice Chair in the Senior Caucus of the California Democratic Party, a member of the Sonoma County Public Authority Advisory Board, and a former Ethics Officer for the Homecare Division of the Service Employees International Union for United Health Care Workers. Taylor was able to use her experience in accounting to help bargaining teams in Sonoma and Marin counties raise the wages of thousands of in-home support service providers.

Dylan Chalfant

KinesiologyMinor in Business Administration, 2010

Dylan Chalfant, 2010 Kinesiology & Recreation Administration, finished his degree by moving to Austin, TX, for an internship with the City of Austin Aquatics Department. After the internship, Chalfant became a seasonal district supervisor for the city, where he supervised a staff of 40 lifeguards. In 2012, he took a full-time, year-round position as the Aquatics Director for a private company called Lifeguard4Hire. Chalfant currently directs a staff of 250 lifeguards, swim instructors, and district supervisors.

Wayne F Hess

Business AdministrationAccounting Concentration, 1964

Wayne F. Hess, 1964 Business Administration, spent a number of years as a forensic accountant after retiring as founder of a Portland-area certified public accountancy firm. Currently Hess is the president of the La Pedrera School Project, a registered public charity for the benefit of indigenous students in the western highlands of Guatemala. To date, over 30 students have graduated from high school and one from university, while just 20 years ago it was rare for a student to advance beyond fourth grade. Hess also works with Casa Xelaju, a Spanish Language school in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, to arrange home-stays with indigenous families while attending classes.

Harriet Ann Burr, 2010 Economics, submitted her thesis, Recidivism Reduction in Humboldt County, for a Master’s of Science in Community Economic Development at Southern New Hampshire University. Burr received an A for her work, and has been authorized as a Master of Science. Burr is currently job searching and researching for her Ph.D.

Sydney Newton

Kinesiology, 2014

Sydney Newton, 2014, Kinesiology & Recreation Administration, was hired as the Community Development Director for the Girl Scouts of Northern California to oversee recruitment and volunteer support for Sonoma, Rohnert Park, Napa, and Petaluma.
