Joshua J. Frye was on the Convention Planning Team for the 104th annual National Communication Association held November 7-11 in Salt Lake City, Utah. With the help of his colleague Dr. Kristen Blinne from SUNY, Joshua coordinated a full week of programming consisting of over 15 sessions, Chaired 3 sessions himself, and along with colleague Dr. Leslie Rossman (Communication, HSU) presented work in progress during a virtual food seminar on social media influencers who are Instagram foodies.

Joshua Frye

Dr. Joshua Frye, Communication, recently published an article entitled “Teaching future doctors to communicate: a communication intervention for medical students in their clinical year” in the Journal of Communication in Healthcare. Frye was a member of a communication consulting and research team alongside his colleague Dr. Joshua Hammonds from Rollins College that worked with Columbia University Medical School and Bassett Healthcare to develop a communication curriculum for third-year medical students during clinical training. The communication intervention was successful in improving the students’ communication skills, especially information giving, which is critical to enabling patients to make informed decisions in shared decision-making.

Leslie Rossman presented at the National Communication Association convention in Dallas TX, November 15-19. Presentations included:

A paper in the first Communication, Economics, and Society preconference titled: "When Neoliberal Discourse Takes a Material Turn Through the Performances of Labor."

A paper at the titled: "The Labor of Neoliberalism is all a Performance: Working to Find Security in the State of Insecurity Through the Discipline of Production"

And finally, Rossman was involved in a symposium titled: "The Legacy of Intersectional Feminism in The Classroom: Teaching Gender and Communication in Trump’s America."

Joshua Frye

Joshua Frye recently published a peer-reviewed journal article in the KB Journal. The KB journal is the journal of the Kenneth Burke Society and is an online scholarly journal dedicated to the study of 20th Century rhetorical theorist and critic Kenneth Burke. Frye's article examines the ascendent rhetoric of the transhumanist movement. In particular, the essay critiques transhumanism's teleological assumption of a technological utopia and the profound political implications for its entelechy of human-machine convergence.
