Are you a whitewater kayaker looking to step up in skills? Are you a sea kayaker looking to learn the next cool technique? Outdoor Adventures is proud to be able to offer Kayak Rolling Instruction here at the Cal Poly Humboldt Pool.

This course will be tailored to fit your experience level. If you are an absolute beginner, we will start with the basics of the roll and move to drills that will help you achieve your first roll. For more experienced kayakers, we can work on perfecting your roll, work on your offside, or teach you other roll techniques.  Once you feel comfortable, we encourage you to check out our options for Kayak Rolling Pool Practice Time.

Bring your own equipment or borrow some of ours - no problem! All participants must wear a US Coast Guard approved personal floatation device and helmet while in the pool. Participants bringing their own equipment are expected to rinse boats of debris and sand/rocks before entering the pool.

Program fee includes: 2 hours of instruction from our guides and safety coverage provided by lifeguards and any kayak equipment needed for your course (kayak, paddle, PFD, helmet, booties, wetsuit, etc.)

Pool Rules and Information

Vessel: This activity uses a wide variety of sit-inside river kayaks. Requires the ability to sit upright in a tight cockpit with a supported backrest and use a paddle. This class can be demanding of upper body strength, coordination, and balance. Participants are expected to be able to propel themselves in a kayak and balance in the boat.

Facility: The Cal Poly Humboldt Pool is an ADA accessible facility. There are locker rooms with storage options, showers, and restrooms. Please bring your own lock if you wish to use a locker - lockers may only be used during the course of the event. The pool has a shallow and a deep end which are both utilized in the class. There are railings entering the pool as well as ladders. The floor around the pool and in the locker areas can become wet and slippery and caution must always be exercised while in the facility.

Persons who wish to request accessibility-related accommodations should contact Outdoor Adventures at (707) 826-3357, or email at OutdoorAdventures@humboldt.edu as soon as possible. Some accommodations may take up to several weeks to arrange.
