McNair Scholars Program
The McNair Scholars Program is one of the US Department of Education's eight TRiO programs and is designed to prepare the scholars for graduate school. McNair Scholars are academically strong undergraduate students who are either first-generation students with financial needs or members of a group that is underrepresented in graduate education. The McNair Scholars Program offers eligible students the opportunity to conduct faculty-mentored research, as well as travel opportunities and support during the graduate school application process. Scholars may come from any degree program leading to a doctoral degree. Unfortunately, we cannot support those seeking a professional degree (e.g., MD, JD, MBA, PsyD, etc.).
Program Benefits
Research Opportunity
The cornerstone of the McNair Scholars Program is the 10-week summer research internship with a faculty mentor. During these ten weeks, scholars will work approximately 40 hours a week conducting research and preparing a research paper. This research opportunity will allow students to present their work at local, regional, and national conferences with expenses paid by the McNair program. Note: Engaging in research and presenting at conferences will help each scholar become a highly competitive applicant when applying to graduate school.
Graduate School Application Assistance
McNair scholars will travel together to visit regional research institutions to help determine if the graduate program is a good fit. The program will pay for travel costs, food, and a cultural experience. In addition, the program will cover the complete cost of GRE tutoring and provide a GRE test reduction voucher.
Scholars will participate in mandatory workshops aimed at preparing scholars for graduate study.
Workshops will cover:
- GRE Test Preparation
- Applying to Graduate School
- Writing Personal Statements and State of Purpose
- Writing Research Papers
- Writing CVs and Resumes
- Public Speaking and Presentation Preparation
- Professional attire and Manner
- Effective Use of the Library & Other Research Tools
- Financial Literacy
