From Transition to Transformation: Empowering Students for STEM and Beyond

3:00 pm to 4:30 pm

Library 209 (Fishbowl)

For Faculty, Staff, and Administrators

How can we, as educators and institutional leaders, ensure that students—especially those from diverse and resource-strained backgrounds—not only adjust to college but excel in STEM and beyond? The answer lies in addressing the transition traps that undermine student success: outdated academic work habits, fragmented learning infrastructures, and a division of labor that burdens faculty while disempowering students.

This session introduces a metacognitive framework to:

  • Identify and dismantle transition traps that impede student progress
  • Utilize Trench Data—a transformative approach to understanding how academic work happens daily—to drive meaningful change
  • Shift the academic workload in ways that enhance student agency and reduce unnecessary burdens on faculty and staff

By fostering a culture of metacognitive learning and data-driven collaboration, we can transform students into not just successful learners, but future leaders who will revitalize our communities and tackle California’s most pressing challenges.

Escaping Transition Traps: The Key to STEM Success and Beyond

5:00 pm to 6:30 pm

Great Hall

For Students

Transitioning from high school to college is more than a change of scenery—it’s a shift in how academic work must be done, especially in STEM courses. Many students from diverse backgrounds, including resource-strained communities, unknowingly fall into transition traps—habits and mindsets that worked in high school but sabotage success in college. The good news? Students are already equipped to overcome these traps.

In this dynamic session, students will learn how to:

  • Recognize and escape common transition traps that hinder academic success, including STEM success
  • Build academic strategies tailored for college-level rigor
  • Leverage your strengths to excel in your STEM journey

We’ll discuss the intersectionality of students of color and women in STEM, exploring the unique challenges and transition traps these groups may face.

Students should bring their course syllabus and a set of notes from at least one course. You'll leave empowered with practical tools to not just survive but thrive in your courses—paving the way for your future career and leadership in your community.
