Giving

Cal Poly Humboldt has a strong sense of community, and the many donors who help support our efforts are an important part of that community.

To ensure students continue receiving the highest-quality education possible, we recommend three key areas where donors can make the greatest impact:

  • Field-based learning, which is critical in preparing students for their careers by taking education beyond the classroom where they can apply their learning in a real-world setting. Examples of field-based learning include Geology Field Camp and excursions on Humboldt’s research vessel, the Coral Sea.
  • Student research, which is a valuable experience for students pursuing competitive jobs and post-graduate programs in the sciences. There are several ways, such as covering travel and equipment expenses, in which donors can help.
  • Scholarships, which, based on need or a combination of other criteria, support students with financial resources to pursue their dreams.

With your support in these key areas, our students will have the experiences they need to learn, grow, and help create a more sustainable future for our planet.

Whether it is special learning opportunities like field trips or community service, access to new technologies, labs, or improved facilities, donors like you have the power to enrich the student experience at Cal Poly Humboldt.

Give to Fisheries

Once at the giving form please enter Fisheries Department in the comments box. This will ensure that we receive your gift.

Alumni can earmark their gifts and donations for specific purposes.

In the Humboldt Fisheries Biology Department, we have three principal areas where gifts and donations can be earmarked:

Fisheries Trust Account

This is a general purpose and very flexible account that an be used for many different purposes.  Example uses include: purchase of new equipment for student and faculty use (e.g., new computers for laboratories or data projectors for classrooms); support for air travel and lodging for visiting speakers; augment support to interview applicants for new faculty or staff positions; development of professional signage for interpretive displays in the Wildlife and Fisheries Building (e.g., for our beautiful new Native American lamprey basket); host combined Fisheries & Wildlife BBQ events each semester; develop plaques in honor of retired Humboldt Fisheries faculty.

Fisheries Founding Faculty Scholarship Fund

Creation of this account was prompted by the passing of John DeWitt, one of the founding faculty in our Fisheries Biology program. Other faculty whom we consider to be among our founders include George Allen, Ernie Salo, Hortense Lanphier, and Richard Ridenhour. Donation to this fund provides an opportunity to honor these individuals. Funds can be used to support undergraduate or graduate scholarships of about $1,000 each, may be earmarked in honor of particular founding faculty.

James Joseph Awards

James Joseph was Humboldt’s first MS graduate in the Fisheries Option (George Allen served as his advisor).  He went on to get a PhD in Fisheries from University of Washington and then served for many years as the Director of the International Tropical Tuna Commission in La Jolla, California. Donations to this award fund can help attract outstanding students to the graduate program (preference given to marine emphasis) in Fisheries Biology at Humboldt.  Awards are usually $5,000-7,500/year for two years.

Roelofs Humboldt Fisheries Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Roelofs Humboldt Fisheries Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by the Humboldt Fishing Lumberjacks, a dedicated group of HSU Fisheries alumni, in partnership with the Humboldt State University Foundation. This permanent endowment honors Dr. Terry Roelofs’ extensive legacy in fisheries science and education at Cal Poly Humboldt, recognizing his transformative impact on students and his dedication to conserving California’s North Coast fisheries. The fund’s purpose is to provide annual financial support to exceptional graduate students pursuing an advanced degree in Fisheries at Cal Poly Humboldt. Two scholarships of $2,500 each are awarded each year to students who demonstrate academic excellence and commitment to the conservation and enhancement of fisheries, particularly in North Coast watersheds and adjacent marine areas. Scholarship eligibility requires a 3.0 GPA and full-time enrollment in the Fisheries graduate program. This scholarship program helps attract dedicated students to Cal Poly Humboldt, fostering a new generation of fisheries professionals committed to advancing the field in the spirit of Terry Roelofs.
