Laurie A. Pinkert

Laurie A. Pinkert, Assistant Professor of English and Coordinator of Composition, was invited to lead writing-focused sessions at Innovative Teaching Through Transitions: A High School-Institutions of Higher Education Symposium on Transitional Math and English. The statewide symposium was sponsored by University of Texas-Pan American. Pinkert's workshop "Writing For Real: Engaging Student Writers Through Effective Assignment Design" was attended by math and English teachers from a range of high schools, two-year colleges, and four year institutions.

Laurie A. Pinkert, Assistant Professor of English and Coordinator of Composition, was recently selected as one of three rhetoric and composition scholars invited to lead written communication sessions at the WASC-Senior College and University Commission Retreat on Core Competencies, which was held November 13-14, 2014 in Pomona, CA. Professor Pinkert presented on "Innovative Writing Pedagogies Sensitive to Local Context" and mentored faculty teams from the U.S., Mexico, and Peru on best practices in pedagogy, program design, and assessment.

English instructor Cyndy Phillips and her fiancé, Peter Jain ('89) have published a collection of photography and poetry titled "Let the Dance Begin: Greetings From Humboldt." The book will be released at Northtown Books during the Sept. 12 Arts! Arcata event.
Dr. Nikola Hobbel

Nikola Hobbel was invited by the NCTE/National Council of Teachers of English Standing Committee on Research to present her latest work in Boston, MA on Nov. 24, 2013. Dr. Hobbel's paper, "Professional Teachers and the Practice of Freedom: The Paradox of Teacher Education Policy in the Neoliberal Era" addresses the impacts and inequalities inherent in high-stakes testing and the Common Core standards policy.
Barbara Brinson Curiel

Professor Barbara Brinson Curiel of the Departments of English and Critical Race, Gender and Sexuality Studies has been named the 2012 winner of the Levine Prize in Poetry for her book, "Mexican Jenny and Other Poems." The award includes publication by Anhinga Press and a $2,000 prize.

David Stacey will attend the 8th Triennial Conference of the Kenneth Burke Society at Clemson University on May 26-29, 2011, where he will present a paper entitled "Listening to Jazz with Kenneth Burke: Identification as Improvisation."

Kathleen Doty recently published “(Un)Becoming Conduct: Cotton Mather’s Ornaments for the Daughters of Zion and the Salem Witchcraft Crisis,” in _Instructional Writing in English_, eds. Matti Peikola et al., published by John Benjamins, Amsterdam.
Her article “Formulaic Discourse and Speech Acts in the Witchcraft Trial Records of Salem, 1692,” appeared in _Journal of Pragmatics_ 41:3, 458-469.

Spent Fall 2009 as Fulbright Visiting Research Chair in Globalization and Cultural Studies at the Institute on Globalization and the Human Condition, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario.
Published "Calypso's Cosmopolitan Strategy: Race, Nation, and Global Culture in Postwar Canada" in issue 10:1 (2010) of the Institute's refereed "Working Papers" series.
Nikola Hobbel

Nikola Hobbel's new text, "Social Justice Pedagogy across the Curriculum: The Practice of Freedom" (co-edited with Thandeka K. Chapman, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) was published in the United States and Europe in April, 2010 by Routledge. Reviewers of the book have noted that it is "A must-have in any teacher education program," and "A brave, smart work [that] comprises hopeful opposition to injustice in school and society."
