Activism to End Sexualized Violence

There are many campus and community events that work to end sexualized violence. The extent to which our community involves itself in these events largely determines their success.

Check IT

Check IT is a student-led movement at Cal Poly Humboldt since 2014.  It's about empowering us with the tools to take action when we see acts of sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking in our community and make clear to those who choose to commit acts of harm that it's not acceptable.

Check IT is also about creating a community where we feel safe, have each other's backs, and look out for one another, whether we know each other or not. Check IT is about creating a community where survivors feel supported, and where those who commit acts of harm are held accountable. Students can get involved with Check IT in several ways. See the Check IT website for more information, including this semester's volunteer drop-in hours.

The Consent Project

The Consent Project is an annual fall event since 2010 at Cal Poly Humboldt. The Consent Project is a space to recognize and honor survivors of sexualized violence of all genders. The event includes a space for survivors and allies to talk about how violence has affected them, and also features community resources and interactive art projects to deconstruct our ideas of gender and sexualized violence.

Take Back the Night

Take Back the Night happens every year at Cal Poly Humboldt in April. According to the WRC: "This is an annual event hosted by the Women's Resource Center (WRC) and is one of the WRC's longest running events. This event is a night in which members of the community come together to challenge domestic partner violence, intimate partner violence, and the other forms of violence that affect us all, but disproportionately impact women. We come together to fight these and the notions that women should take precautions to prevent these forms of violence happening against them, instead by arguing that we should be challenging the systems in place that perpetuate these forms of violence."

Take Back the Night includes the Clothesline Project, the Silent Witness Project, a rally, speak out, and march.

Visit the Women's Resource Center website for more information.

Act to End Sexualized Violence I

In the fall semester, the 1-unit course "Act to End Sexualized Violence" is offered. Everyone is encouraged to enroll!

"Act to End Sexualized Violence" was built out of student activism and addresses sexualized violence not just as an individual act, but as part of a rape-supportive culture. Sexualized violence affects everyone. This is a chance for students from all different majors and departments to take part in critical discussions about violence, accountability, healing, and supporting survivors. A component of the class is focused on taking action to end sexualized violence.

Act to End Sexualized Violence II

In the spring semester, Cal Poly Humboldt offers the 3-unit course, "Act to End Sexualized Violence II." This course foregrounds prevention education, understanding sexualized violence and also allows students to build group facilitation and active listening skills.
