College of Natural Resources & Sciences

This study examines knobcone pine (Pinus attenuata) germination success from stratification to transplanting into a common garden at the Schatz Demonstration Tree Farm. Seeds were sown in containers in the greenhouse after three week of cold stratification and transplanted to garden beds a month later. Of 840 seeds sown, 538 were germinated (64%). 256 seedlings were outplanted and 192 of these survived (75%±15). The seedlings grew to an average height of 7.5 cm ± 2 cm. Our findings are part of a larger study to understand the water requirements for the survival of tree germinants in a Mediterranean climate.

This project is led by David Marshall and Tamara Barriquand with the help of HSU student facilitators. The project is a Native American youth outreach program designed to encourage STEM through the use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), known as drones. This four week summer program guides high school students through a ground pilot school that will earn them a FAA UAS Pilot's License, while also providing presentations, tutorials and activities related to aviation, environmental and applied sciences, and GIS. One goal of the program is to help underrepresented communities earn a pilot's license that can introduce them to new career opportunities in a variety of fields.

Le Cygne (The Swan) by Camille Saint-Saens

Presentation Year: 2021

Emily Morse Music Undergraduate Student,Aaron LopezMusicUndergraduate Student
College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences

The Swan is the 13th movement of the 'The Carnival of the Animals' by Camille Saint-Saëns. Also known as 'Le Cygne' in French, this is one of the most famous cello works originally scored for cello accompanied by two pianos. Like the animal it is named after, this is a very graceful and elegant piece. For this performance, my classmate Aaron Lopez is accompanying me on piano while I am playing the cello.

Novel Tests of Gravity Below Fifty Microns

Presentation Year: 2021

Frankie TrombettaPhysicsUndergraduate Student
College of Natural Resources & Sciences

The Gravity Lab at Humboldt State is concerned with measuring the force of gravity at unprecedented distance scales. Theories new and old make predictions about how gravity should behave, but accurate measurements of gravitational forces between objects close together have remained challenging. The crux of the experiment lies in sufficiently silencing the non-gravitational forces acting at the measuring site, and accomplishing this requires applying at least a little knowledge from most undergraduate physics classes. The implications of progress in this lab make it exciting to a general audience while remaining beneficial from an undergraduate learning perspective.

RAMP Up Your Courage 2021

Presentation Year: 2021

Leslie Gonzalez CarrascoSocial WorkUndergraduate Student,Tracy SmithRetention through Academic Mentoring Program (RAMP)Staff
College of Professional Studies

RAMP Up Your Courage (RUYC) events were facilitated by peer mentors employed by the First-Year Retention through Academic Mentoring Program (FY-RAMP) and the Major Based Peer Mentoring - Retention through Academic Mentoring Program (MBPM-RAMP). It takes courage to explore academic identities. RUYC was intended to empower students to examine emerging academic identities by connecting them with the MBPM mentors of the same major. By leveraging existing relationships between FY-RAMP and the freshmen whom they serve, as well as partnering FY-RAMP with MBPM-RAMP for the presentations, a bridge was built between the two mentoring programs, benefitting both mentors and students they serve.

The Beautiful Body Project

Presentation Year: 2021

Destiny AlcarazESM 435Undergraduate Student
College of Professional Studies

Eating disorders affect at least 9% of the world population (ANAD, 2020). About 28-74% of risk from eating disorders is through genetic heritability (ANAD, 2020). In the City of Whittier there is a lack of awareness and education on body positivity and eating disorders. The Beautiful Body Project will increase middle and high school student's awareness of eating disorders. It will also promote body positivity among these students. This program aims to provide resources for not only the students but also the community.

The Impacts of Soy on Patients with Hyperthyroidism

Presentation Year: 2021

Kelly WheelockKinesiologyUndergraduate Student,Jake SmithKinesiologyGraduate Student
College of Professional Studies

Soy has become increasingly popular over the years. There have been both positive and negative benefits to consuming soy known to date. We aimed to show how the consumption of soy, particularly the phytoestrogen isoflavones components, affects patients with hyperthyroidism. Soy isoflavones are similar in both structure and function to human estrogen and can bind to mammalian estrogen receptors. This can create either estrogenic or anti-estrogenic effects. Hyperthyroidism is commonly influenced by estrogen activity so our study aimed to show how consuming soy can be beneficial.

Title 9 in Higher Education: Understanding the Struggles, Triumphs, and Setbacks of this Policy

Presentation Year: 2021

Georgina RuizEducation Graduate Student,Chelsea RiosEducationUndergraduate Student
Other

In this research, we will talk about the correlations between the struggle for a fair and just system based on Title 9 as something that happens in a college environment. We argue that Title 9 is necessary to constitutionally protect people, but that the policy has its flaws. Rape, sexual assault, gender equity, are experiences that people are forced to overcome by sharing the trauma they underwent by acknowledging that this happened to them.

Traditionally Driven & Community Based Health Services

Presentation Year: 2021

Rhiannon RudickCellular and Molecular BiologyUndergraduate Student
College of Natural Resources & Sciences

At Humboldt State University, I study Cellular and Molecular Biology and have minors in Chemistry and Spanish. After I graduate with my Behavioral Science Degree, I plan to go to the College of the Redwoods to become a Registered Nurse. Going into the medical field to me means helping others and making a difference in the community I grew up in. My hope is to become a Registered Nurse and have the opportunity to work or volunteer with United Indian Health Services at Potawot Health Village or the Eureka Health Center. Being a part of an organization that focuses on health, sustainability, and Indigenous sovereignty would allow me to make real change in my community.
