(In)Equities in the Publishing Industry: The Politics of Representation

As the primary Academic Advisor and Program Coordinator for the Liberal Studies Elementary Education (LSEE) Program in the College of Professional Studies at Cal Poly Humboldt, I provide dedicated support to future educators through each stage of their academic journey. My role encompasses guiding students from their initial orientation through program completion, emphasizing holistic advising practices, proactive recruitment, and retention strategies. In close collaboration with Program Leaders, School of Education Faculty, Fieldwork Supervisors, and local educators, I work to build a cohesive and supportive environment for our undergraduate students.

My scholarly background in the Applied English MA program, where I served as a Graduate Teaching Associate, greatly informs my approach to advising. My thesis, titled “(In)Equities in the Publishing Industry: The Politics of Representation,” examines systemic biases within publishing—particularly concerning race, gender, and sexuality—and highlights the need for more equitable, inclusive practices. This research has been instrumental in shaping my advising philosophy, reinforcing my commitment to inclusivity and the importance of addressing dynamics of power and privilege in educational settings.

Every day, I draw upon the skills and insights from my graduate studies to support the diverse body of students within the LSEE program. I am dedicated to helping each student find their path to success, fostering a community that values growth, equity, and empowerment.
