Diversity and Equity Fellows
Student Equity Research: Jianmin Zhong, College of Natural Resources and Sciences
Jianmin has been an advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion since assuming the role of Pre-med faculty advisor in 2019. Understanding the urgent need to address disparities in healthcare, he developed the BIO482 course, which includes a supervised internship specifically designed to provide equitable access to clinical experiences for students from underrepresented backgrounds. Supported by a California state-funded grant, Jianmin recruits 10 URM or economically disadvantaged students each summer, giving them the opportunity to shadow medical professionals and gain essential clinical experience.
Jianmin's commitment to DEI extends beyond healthcare. He actively serves on the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) DEI sub-Committee, contributing to a guided self-study of advising practices on campus. In his role as an ODEI representative, Jianmin collaborates with committee members to compile data and evidence, aiming to make recommendations that will enhance advising practices, with a particular focus on improving the advising of URM students.
Moreover, Jianmin has been involved in the Equity Priority #5 project, which seeks to address disparities in DFW rates within STEM courses on campus. His unwavering commitment to equity in academic outcomes drives his efforts in this area.
Through his work, Jianmin demonstrates a deep commitment to fostering an inclusive academic environment and expanding opportunities for underrepresented students in both educational and healthcare settings.
