Career Pathway in Archeology
Student Internship
In collaboration with the Anthropology Department, the Cultural Resources Facility (CRF) is committed to providing training for students beginning their careers in archaeology. Students work along-side the professional staff on a wide range of projects where they will acquire hands-on experience. The Career Pathway in Archeology internship program equips both graduate and undergraduate students with the skills and confidence to launch their careers in archaeology and geospatial investigations. If you are interested in anthropology, like to organize, teach, work with computers, and meet new people, then this program is for you!

Monthly Workshops
Throughout the semester, interactive workshops are offered to students. Key cultural resource management (CRM) topics such as lithic analysis, artifact curation, NRHP eligibility, and report writing are covered during these presentations. These workshops also provide students with an understanding of CRM laws, including NEPA and CEQA, to ensure compliance with legal standards.
Field Experience
Students are offered to join CRF teams in the field for survey and excavation, learning fieldwork methods firsthand. Day/weekend trips are offered during the school term but students are invited to join full 10-day rotations during summer break.
Historic Buildings Database
The goal of this project is to create a Geographical Information System (GIS) Feature Class that houses spatial and a-spatial data for all known historic buildings in the Humboldt Bay area. Students are currently entering data from several published sources that include information about property location, building style, date of construction etc. Students will collaborate with groups that are conducting, or have conducted historic properties inventories in the Humboldt Bay area, to further this research. When complete the GIS feature class will be added to a geo-database that will hold various cultural resource datasets. Students will utilize this dataset to perform analysis that will provide a greater understanding of European settlement patterns in the Humboldt Bay area.
Exploring Personal Research Interests
Students are encouraged to explore and develop their personal research interests within the realm of CRM, with opportunities to contribute to ongoing projects and initiate independent research during their internship.
