Stephen L Kraynick
Journalism, 1997
Coach Kraynick (Journalism, '98) scored career tennis win No.100 at Kellis HS (Glendale, AZ) on 4/12/20. This isn't counting his head coaching collegiate wins at Lock Haven University (Lock Haven, PA) or Allan Hancock College (Santa Maria, CA). Coach Kraynick coached at the HS level in CA, PA, and AZ, winning sectional championships in all three states; in addition to winning the CCCAA divisional championship at Hancock College in 1995, he coached the Top-25 NCAA Division II women's team at Lock Haven University (1998-2000). Coach K has also worked with numerous ATP/WTA Professionals on tour.
Andy Powell

Still residing in Humboldt, Andy Powell ('05, Philosophy) finds that his degree in Philosophy easily influences not only his day-to-day being in the world but also his varied professional life since 2005. Powell started Powell Consulting in 2018, offering financial consulting for local businesses and specifically focusing on the local cannabis industry. Detailed analytical thought is quite useful when trying to take a long-term approach to financial regulation and planning as is asking his clients "What is the Good Life, really?" and "Is rapid accumulation of wealth a goal in itself?" He expects to be out of business by 2024.
Kate Nixon
Journalism, 2005
Since graduating and spending a life-changing week in New Zealand, Kate Nixon ('05, Journalism) has survived 11 years in broadcast news, working their way up from Humboldt County to Southern Oregon as a newscast director, technical supervisor, and eventually accomplished producing a 3-part series about school teachers and the costume department at the world-renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival. After a few years back in their native San Francisco Bay Area where they served as an apprenticeship manager, they finally moved cross country to live in Asheville, NC, where they now run a national conference on the historic Arts & Crafts Movement.
Pamela Schwartz

Pamela Schwartz recently started a business working freelance as a presentation design specialist at www.butterflypam.com. A Powerpoint design pro, Schwartz specializes in helping business present a professional presentation. Schwartz also still paints and has a thriving art career.

May Johnson has been accepted to several prestigious law schools including Harvard Law School and will likely be attending Harvard Law School starting in Fall 2022!
LOWELL COTTLE

After 15 years working as an environmental consultant, Lowell Cottle moved on to work for the state at the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board as an environmental scientist. Cottle is excited to be part of a team that inspects industrial sites for compliance with state and federal water codes where Cottle can really make a difference! Cottle investigates and tracks down potential sources of pollution from stormwater exposure and works with facility owners to be in compliance with the Clean Water Act.

Trent Garrett began working for California Assemblymember Cristina Garica (AD 58) as a Legislative Aide. For the previous 6 months Garrett worked for Assemblymember Tasha Boerner Horvath (AD 76).
David Clark
History, 1971
David Clark migrated to Australia in 1972 and taught high school until retirement in 2007.
Nikki Jardin
Environmental Studies, 1999
Nikki Jardin recently launched an online and print publication created for people experiencing dementia-related illness, brain trauma or other cognitive impairment. Mirador Magazine is the first leisure-oriented magazine created specifically for this community. Nikki was inspired to create Mirador when she couldn't find accessible, magazine-type reading materials for her aunt who had been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's Disease. The first two issues were published this past Summer & Fall, and a third will come off the press in late December. You can learn more at www.miradormagazine.com
Neil L Aaland

Neil recently retired after 16 years as a sole proprietor environmental/natural resources planner and 25 years in local and state government service in Washington State. After obtaining his B.A. from HSU, he spent a year in Ohio at Bowling Green State University where he received a M.A. in Geography. He has fond memories of his time at HSU and intends to visit in retirement.
