Provost's Communication - October 12, 2022

October 12, 2022

Hello everyone,

Happy Wednesday. I hope your week is going well. The Fall weather is certainly upon us and it is crisp and beautiful outside. The leaves changing outside of my window are gorgeous.

Advising Holds

Thanks to those of you that engaged on the topic of advising holds during the Provost-Council of Chairs meeting on September 15, 2022, as well as during Professional Development Day on August 19, 2022.

What I learned from our conversations on advising and specifically advising holds is that our campus holds a deep commitment to supporting the success of our students and that there is not one agreed-upon way to do so. Therefore, in an effort to reduce barriers for our students, begin to chip away at retention challenges, and attempt to reduce workload for some faculty and staff, beginning Fall 2023 we will only place advising holds on the following students:

  1. New first-year students to Cal Poly Humboldt (first semester only).
  2. New transfer students to Cal Poly Humboldt (first semester only).
  3. Probationary students (each semester they are on probation).

Please note, advising holds for all students will remain in place as usual for Spring 2023 registration to give everyone an opportunity to prepare and plan for the forthcoming change in Fall 2023 HOWEVER you may choose to adopt the Fall 2023 approach early if you would like. Also, as a reminder, the reduction in advising holds does not preclude you from continuing to meet with your advisees early and often, it just removes the requirement to do so prior to registration for many students. Additionally, there are other types of holds that are placed on students for example financial. This change is for advising holds only.

Thank you for your continued commitment to our students and their success at Cal Poly Humboldt.
