September 25, 2024

Hola and buenos dias from Guanajuato, Mexico as I have had the pleasure of traveling with an incredible group of students, faculty, and administrators to the State to continue planning and refinement for a service learning opportunity for students in a health clinic in San Miguel De Allende and to participate in an International Expo and Forum invited by the University of Guanajuato. I am particularly excited that two of our students from El Lenador are presenting today at the Expo with a presentation title called, “Empowering Voices: Bilingual Journalism for Professional Growth, Community Impact, and Social Justice.” Please send them good vibes as I am sure they will be amazing today. Our group includes:

  • Rosamel Benavides-Garb, Associate Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Campus Diversity Officer

  • Maryanne Casas-Perez, Student

  • Maria Hernandez Coosemans, Student

  • Mateo Dean, Professor and Chair of World Languages and Culture

  • Evelyn Herrera Gonzalez, Student

  • Andrea Juarez, Journalism faculty and faculty advisor to El Lenador

  • Justus Ortega, Acting Dean for the College of Professional Studies

  • Laura Power, Faculty for the Department of Social Work

Institutional Research, Analytics, and Reporting (IRAR) Collaborations

IRAR, through partnerships with other CSUs, the chancellor’s office and Amazon, is developing advanced data solutions, including a cloud-based data warehouse, an early alert dashboard, and AI-driven pathways to degree attainment. Well done!

Security Operations Center (SOC) Launch

Information Technology Services (ITS) established a Security Operations Center (SOC) in 2024, integrating student workers to enhance our information security while providing hands-on cybersecurity training.

Institutional Anti-Racism Action Plan (IARAP)

In partnership with the University Senate, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and the 15-member Institutional Anti-Racism Action Plan Task Force, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) will continue to advance Cal Poly Humboldt’s Institutional Anti-Racism Action Plan (IARAP), which is embedded within the university’s Strategic Plan as a commitment to cultural transformation. The IARAP task force has been instrumental in the review and update process of the IARAP, which involved extensive consultation with the campus community throughout the 2023/24 academic year.

This plan embodies the university's dedication to creating an equitable, just, and inclusive environment, striving to enhance the experiences and success of BIPOC students and employees. The task force, led by co-chairs, ODEI’s Dr. Rosamel Benavides Garb, Associate Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Campus Diversity Officer, and Dr. Ramona Bell, Professor of Critical Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (CRGS) is currently writing a draft IARAP and will engage campus constituents over the course of this academic year. The goal this year is to finalize a living document that aligns with Cal Poly Humboldt’s overarching goals of social justice and institutional excellence.

I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week!
