September 18, 2024

Hello and happy Wednesday. I hope your week is going well. I completely forgot to recognize a really cool event I went to on Friday which was the Student Film Showcase. It was absolutely incredible. Our students, and the faculty that guide their creativity, are exceptional. Well done Dave Jannetta, Sara Lasley, Michelle Cartier, and Nicola Waugh.

Student Excellence Never Goes Out of Style

  • It’s never too late to acknowledge our students’ excellence. Last Spring, Cal Poly Humboldt student media makers received 21 state awards, along with national recognition, at the Excellence in Student Media Awards reception for the California College Media Association.

  • Model UN - The Cal Poly Humboldt Model UN team won an Outstanding Delegation Award, placing it in the top 20% of teams at the Model United Nations Conference in New York this past spring. It was the highest ranking a team fielded from Humboldt has ever achieved. There was a great story in Humboldt now over the summer. Take a look.

Have you heard that we have a new research vessel under construction?

As part of our polytechnic transformation, we are upgrading our research vessel. We completed a competition for a builder and awarded a contract for $7.9M to All American Marine to build this new oceanographic research vessel to be operated by the College of Natural Resources and Sciences (CNRS) on behalf of marine and oceanographic scholarship at Cal Poly Humboldt. The 78-foot-by 28-foot custom-built aluminum catamaran powered by twin 1100 horsepower Tier 4 engines will travel at speeds up to 24 knots. The vessel—expected to be operational in early 2025—will carry up to 40 students, faculty, and crew on day trips and accommodate up to 14 people on multi-day research voyages. The vessel will have a variety of hydraulic deck machinery for handling up to 5,000 lb of oceanographic equipment and instrumentation. This new vessel will improve our students’ experiences, reduce staffing costs, and allow for an expansion of activities. Please see the attached photo renderings!

Have a wonderful rest of your week.

Jenn
