Hello and happy Wednesday.
Faculty Representation on the Community Engagement Team (CET)
The work to form and train the Community Engagement Team (CET) is well underway. As a reminder, the CET is a cross-functional group established to monitor, educate, and encourage compliance with university policies and laws, with a primary focus on fostering a peaceful, safe, and respectful campus environment.
The CET will support individuals through the free speech process in accordance with university policy and California law. The team will be composed of university professional staff, students, administrators, and faculty members, led by the Office of the Dean of Students. The CET will play a crucial role in monitoring outdoor free speech activities coordinated by students, registered student organizations, and campus visitors, providing support and guidance as needed.
The following faculty members are joining the CET:
Armeda C. Reitzel (Communication)
Alana Chin (Biological Sciences)
Jen Maguire (Social Work)
Dan Barton (Wildlife)
David Tuttle (Computer Science)
Andrea Delgago (English)
Julie Alderson (Art)
Joice Chang (Politics)
Tim Miller (Library)
Lou Ann Wieand (Psychology Emeritus)
These faculty will join employees from other classifications whose names are forthcoming. I am grateful for our partnership with the Dean of Students Office on this effort.

GEAR at Cal Poly Humboldt and CSU GE Breadth/Cal-GETC Administrative Implementation
In accordance with changes to EO 1100 which establishes systemwide requirements for CSU General Education, there will be one common GE pattern for the CSU, the UC, and the California Community Colleges. This update takes effect at the start of the Fall 2025 semester and requires a revision of Cal Poly Humboldt's GE program. Some changes include a new naming convention (view the crosswalk here). The update also includes the discontinuation of Area E: Lifelong Learning, the reduction of 3 units of required lower-division Area C: Arts/Humanities coursework, and the addition of 1 unit of laboratory, which may be embedded in a physical or biological science course as long as the 7-unit lower-division requirement for Science is met. All of the current GE-certified courses (A-F) will be changed to the new numbering system in bulk, with the exception of Area E courses--these courses will receive an individual curricular review as they apply to new areas or are discontinued. The GEAR curriculum subcommittee began work on the administrative implementation of these changes over the summer and has launched a GEAR program change proposal in Cal Poly Humboldt's curriculum management system (proposal 24-2585).
Please take a moment to review the naming convention changes and the GEAR tri-fold. If you have questions, contact GEAR committee chair, Sara Hart (sara.hart@humboldt.edu), AVP of Academic Programs, Carmen Bustos-Works (carmen.works@humbldt.edu), and Curriculum Analyst for Academic Programs, Khristan Lamb (khristan.lamb@humboldt.edu).
Are you Interested in Ethically Integrating Indigenous Knowledge into your Curriculum, But Aren’t Sure Where to Start?
The Native American Studies Department, Center for Teaching and Learning, Office of Sustainability, and Office of the Provost have partnered to host a faculty book circle focused on intersections of Indigenous Knowledge and environmentalism. In this book circle, we engage with texts by Indigenous scholars and discuss how to incorporate Indigenous knowledge and praxis into our work in ethical and sustainable ways. This semester’s Book Circle will run from October 4 - November 8, 2024, and weekly meetings will be held on Fridays from 1:00-2:30 pm on Zoom.
This fall, we will be reading Ka'm-t'em: A Journey Toward Healing by Dr. Kishan Lara-Cooper and Dr. Walter J. Lara Sr. The Book circle will be facilitated by Dr. Kaitlin Reed, Cal Poly Humboldt’s TEK Faculty Fellow. Copies of the book will be provided to all participants.
This book circle is an opportunity for faculty at Cal Poly Humboldt to remain at the cutting edge of sustainability, social justice, and community environmental research. All disciplines are invited to creatively engage with this challenge. Faculty engagement with this book circle will help Cal Poly Humboldt maintain its leadership within the CSU system as a campus that continues to bridge the social sciences and STEM.
If you are interested in participating, please register for the book circle at https://tinyurl.com/fall24bookcircle.
Thank you and have a wonderful rest of your week.
