October 9, 2024

Hello everyone and happy Wednesday. I hope your week is going well.

Early Academic Feedback for Student Athletes

If you have student-athletes enrolled in any of your classes you should have recently received an “Early Academic Feedback for Student Athletes” email. Please respond to this message – doing so provides information the Athletics Department needs to identify and support students in need, and helps us fulfill NCAA requirements for student-athlete eligibility.

Early feedback indicates that faculty are very much appreciating the updated form you are being asked to fill out – it’s been simplified to make it even easier to submit. Please respond by Tuesday, October 15, 2024, and thank you for your support of our student-athletes.

URPC Budget Forum 101 Information

The University Resources and Planning Committee (URPC) of the University Senate, in collaboration with the University Budget Office, will be holding an Open Forum for the Campus Community on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, from 11:30 - 1:00 pm in the SAC 131 the Banquet Room. The purpose of this forum is to introduce University budgeting concepts, processes, timelines, and the functions of the URPC. This will be followed by a presentation on the state of the budget at Cal Poly Humboldt. This presentation will cover developments at the State and CSU system level that impact our campus budget, as well as the impact of enrollment changes on our financial outlook. Lunch will be provided.

Questions can be submitted ahead of time at OAAVP@humboldt.edu. Please submit your questions by Monday, October 21, 2024, at 12 pm.

Incarcerated Scholars Conference

The Alliance for Higher Education in Prison is excited to announce the first-ever Incarcerated Scholars Conference (ISC) is just around the corner! ISC will take place online on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 and Wednesday, October 30, 2024. This virtual conference will feature currently incarcerated scholars, who will give presentations on the value, methods, and future of higher education in prison as well as creative works.

Our own Cal Poly Humboldt Incarcerated Scholars will present on October 29, 2024, from the Pelican Bay State Prison from 10 am to 11 am and their presentations will be livestreamed in the Fishbowl at the Library. Maxwell Schurner and Mark Taylor will be at the prison helping to facilitate the presentations while Steve Ladwig will be in the fishbowl supporting the virtual platform. You can join Steve in the fishbowl or livestream from your office.

You can register for the conference or learn more about it on the ISC landing page or by contacting isc@higheredinprison.org.

Enrollment Update

I hope you all saw the campus-wide post-census enrollment message to campus,  that showed our enrollment was up this fall by 1.2%. We saw an uptick in retention and strong growth in upper-division transfer. There was also an increase in master’s degree students.

The Fall 2025 application opened last week and we already have 5,059 in-progress first-time undergraduate (FTUG) applications and 453 completed. We have also seen just over 300 graduate applications. It will take another week or so to have comparison numbers in the Humis tables, because of the way applications were loaded in previous terms. As a point of interest, in mid-November last year, we had 3,303 completed applications - so if we can move a large percentage of our current in-progress applications to completion between now and then, we should be well on our way to a positive enrollment trend. Admissions is sponsoring 16 application completion workshops between now and the end of November. If you have questions about this, please reach out to OAAVP@humboldt.edu and we will connect you with enrollment management. As a reminder,  the CSU-wide application deadline is December 2, 2024.

Thanks and have a great week.
