October 25, 2023

Hello everyone and happy Wednesday. I hope your week is going well. I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the following Cal Poly Humboldt GI2025/Inclusive Student Success committee members and Senate leadership who attended the GI 2025 Convening in San Diego with me and Vice President of Enrollment Management Chrissy Holiday this week. They are:

Rosamel Benavides-Garb, Associate Vice President of the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) and Campus Diversity Officer

Amber Blakeslee, Executive Director of Budget and Finance

Carmen Bustos-Works, Associate Vice President of Academic Programs and Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies

Mike Le, Director of Institutional Research and Reporting (IRAR)

Peggy Metzger, Director of Financial Aid, and Executive Director of Enrollment Management

Mitch Mitchell, Associate Vice President of Student Success and Dean of Students

Jenni Robinson Reisinger, Registrar

Jim Woglom, Senate Chair and General Faculty President, Chair of the School of Education, and Associate Professor in Art Education.

We had an opportunity to hear directly from Chancellor Garcia about her vision, review the latest data to inform GI 2025 work, and have collaborative time with colleagues across the system. I look forward to sharing more information with each of you about opportunities to close equity gaps, improve graduation and retention rates, and impact the success of our students in the near future.

Paid PreMed Summer Student Internships: Application Deadline November 1, 2023

The ‘Paid PreMed Summer Internship Healthcare Careers Program’ engages Cal Poly Humboldt and College of the Redwoods students, who are from traditionally underrepresented groups and regions to gain meaningful internship experiences in primary care and other healthcare fields in Humboldt and surrounding counties. The proposal's overall objectives are to narrow the equity and opportunity gap and inspire students from historically underrepresented groups and disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue high-impact healthcare careers in rural areas. Students are provided with broad exposure to healthcare specialties while developing professional skills and a deeper understanding of health challenges facing rural communities.

The program is led by Dr. Jianmin Zhong, a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Cal Poly Humboldt. Dr. Zhong is also the PreMed advisor on campus and was recently appointed as a Diversity and Equity Faculty Fellow. In addition to overall program leadership, Dr. Zhong teaches the Supervised Internship class (BIOL482) during Spring and Summer to prepare and oversee participating interns for the clinical rotations.

The Paid PreMed Summer Internship Healthcare Careers program application link is here. The application deadline is November 1, 2023.  The Paid PreMed Summer Internship Healthcare Careers program website is https://healthcareinternship.humboldt.edu/psihfc-home.

Thanks and have a wonderful rest of your day.
