Provost Communication, Wednesday, October 2, 2024

October 2, 2024

Good morning and happy Wednesday. I hope your week is going well. I spent time yesterday and today at my CSU System Provost Meeting in Long Beach connecting with colleagues across the system and discussing a myriad of topics like systemness, TPM, CalNAGPRA, accessibility, international efforts, and of course the budget. Yesterday’s meeting included Betsy Boyd, ASCSU Chair, and it was nice to be in community with her. Today, the Provosts and the Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) will meet to collaborate.

Well Done: Award-Winning 3D Digital Herbarium

The Library received the American Library Association’s Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) Best Emerging Technology Award 2024 for the 3D Digital Herbarium project and was recently awarded a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Leadership Grants Program to plan to grow this into an exhibit tool for any discipline. The first of its kind, Cal Poly Humboldt’s 3D Digital Herbarium started from AJ Bealum’s capstone project. Bealum is now the project manager, working alongside the library Dean, Cyril Oberlander through funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences. The 3D Digital Herbarium is a novel, interactive 3D digital exhibit learning environment for botany showcasing 3D photogrammetry specimens, relevant 2D digitized herbarium specimen sheets, botanical and location information, and student annotations.

Monthly Listening Circles for Faculty and Staff, starting Thursday, October 3, 2024, from 11 am - 12 pm

The purpose of these monthly listening circles is to create a consistent forum where faculty and staff can engage in open dialogue, deep listening, and constructive rapport. Each voice will be respected and valued. The timing of the sessions, from 11 am - 12 pm, is intended to embed this opportunity into the workday, symbolizing institutional support for employee participation and well-being. Facilitators from our partnering organizations will guide the conversations.

If you would like to participate, RSVP here and join us for the first listening circle of the academic year in person at the Library Fishbowl, Library 209, or virtually using the Zoom link provided here.

The session will begin with a full group introduction to the purpose of the listening circles and the establishment of community agreements for engagement. We will then break out into smaller groups for more focused discussion and reconvene at the end for a brief full-group engagement, where additional sharing can occur. Please note that no notes will be taken, and the sessions will not be recorded.

Important: This space is intended for discussing personal experiences and the campus social climate. Please remember that all employees and facilitators have a "Duty to Report" experience of harassment and sexualized violence.

To help us plan accordingly, please RSVP using this Google Form.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and we're focusing on strengthening our campus community's digital security practices. This month-long initiative includes weekly challenges, valuable resources, and the chance to win prizes, all aimed at promoting a safer online environment for students, faculty, and staff. Be sure to check the ITS Cybersecurity website at https://its.humboldt.edu/security and keep an eye on your email for more details and how to participate.

Have a great rest of your week.
