Good morning and happy Wednesday. I hope your second week of the Spring 2023 semester is going well.
Call for Nominations to Serve as a STEM-NET Faculty Fellow: Application Due February 20, 2023.
I am currently seeking applications for a STEM-NET Faculty Fellow to represent Cal Poly Humboldt. The CSU currently has ten multicampus consortia that conduct collaborative research and education activities on a breadth of topics. STEM-NET constitutes the most extensive of consortia since all 23 campuses are members. The expectation is that STEM-NET will eventually be self-funded through grants and contracts. The STEM-NET vision is to make the CSU a worldwide leader in increasing the pipeline, preparation, graduation, and employment of outstanding, diverse STEM students. The mission is to enable CSU STEM leaders to share expertise and leverage system-wide opportunities to foster the implementation of global best practices in research, pedagogy, and learning related to the STEM fields within the CSU.
Applicants: must be a full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty with a disciplinary association with science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) and who are active disciplinary and/or pedagogical scholars. The period of appointment is summer 2023 through spring 2024. Compensation is a summer 2023 stipend of $5,000 and three (3) semester units (AWTU) for the fall 2023 and spring 2024 semesters. The faculty fellow will report to the Provost (or designee). Continuation of the appointment beyond the initial period is contingent upon budget, organizational needs, and performance.
Responsibilities:
- Work with key faculty to develop and submit targeted STEM-based proposals. The subject areas are to be determined in consultation with the Provost (or designee).
- Develop collaborative grants (educational- and research-based) with faculty.
- Help promote a culture of scholarship on campus.
- Take on new initiatives designated by the Provost.

Come Celebrate the New PBLC Office Thursday, February 2nd from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at Septentrio Winery in Arcata!
We are excited to announce the new Department of Place Based Learning Communities (PBLC) for Cal Poly Humboldt. The office will support the development and implementation of PBLCs across the university so all first-year students are welcomed to the university through place-based pre-semester onboarding activities, transition curriculum, and opportunities to build community with peers, staff, faculty, and off campus communities. Come celebrate with PBLC colleagues across the campus at Septentrio on Thursday, February 2, 2023 from 5-7pm.
Program Director Katlin Goldenberg leads the office of three additional staff members: Raven Palomera, Thomas Elliot, and Jade Williams. The office is formally located in Academic Programs, which will strengthen the alliance with academic and career advising, RAMP, Center for Community Based Learning (CCBL), and the Dean of Students to support all Cal Poly Humboldt first-year students. The office will support the 12 existing learning communities across the three colleges and assist other faculty and staff teams in the development of new PBLCs.
You can learn more about PBLCs by visiting the website, or viewing the recording of our recent PBLC Workshop during Professional Development Day. The workshop was primarily intended to support faculty developing pre-proposals for new PBLCs to launch in Fall 2024, but the content centers on core components of programming and may be of interest to others looking to get involved. If you are interested in participating in PBLCs, please contact the department office at pblc@humboldt.edu.
