February 5, 2025

Hello everyone and happy Wednesday. I hope you are having a good week albeit it is a rainy and chilly one!

Reminder- URPC Budget Update & Forum - Tomorrow, Thursday, February 6, 2025 @ 11:30 am

I know many people are feeling anxious about the budget in light of reduced higher education funding, increased expenses, and news in the headlines of financial challenges most recently by our sister campus Sonoma State. If this is you, please attend our budget forum tomorrow.

The University Resources and Planning Committee (URPC) of the University Senate, in collaboration with the University Budget Office, will be holding a Budget Update & Open Forum for the Campus Community on February 6, 202,5 from 11:30 - 1:00 pm in the SAC 131 The Banquet Room. Lunch will be served.

The purpose of this forum is to introduce campus community members to budgeting concepts, update the campus on the state of the budget (State of California, CSU, and Humboldt), and educate about the role and functions of the URPC. Questions can be submitted ahead of time at OAAVP@humboldt.edu. Please submit your questions by today Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at 12 pm. The presentation will be recorded and the PowerPoint slides and the recording will be distributed next week. The Q&A portion of the session will not be recorded.

Well Done: Information Technology Services (ITS)

Check out some cool work out of ITS. They recently built a High-Performance Research Network (HPRN) to enable researchers to share large datasets at higher speeds. This infrastructure allowed our researchers and students to access computational resources across the country through the National Research Platform (NRP). We contribute to the NRP, thanks to NVIDIA server donations facilitated by Bori Mazzag and Dale Oliver. Since bringing the first node online on the NRP, we’ve supported 60 different namespaces from across the country, representing unique research projects from institutions such as Caltech (LIGO), Stanford University (Kundaje Lab), University of Wisconsin (IceCube), and UC San Diego (SunCAVE).

To put it into perspective, the resource Contribution from One Node is equivalent to:

  • 27,600 graphics processing unit (GPU) hours (equivalent to 3.1 years of GPU time)

  • 251,000 Central Processing Unit (CPU) hours (equivalent to 28.6 years of CPU time)

Breaking Down the Gear Wall: Outerwear Donation and Exchange Program for Students

Do you have any extra jackets or boots you are no longer using? As we are acutely aware of the weather this week, Humboldt is a beautiful place to live and explore, but it can get very cold and wet. Not everyone has the right clothing to stay warm and comfortable outside. The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) has organized a program aimed to help students, so everyone can enjoy what Humboldt has to offer. In the words of our CAHSS colleagues, “Let’s share the warmth and make the outdoors more accessible.”

A flyer is attached with additional information and you can also contact Sandra Brekke at cahssoffice@humboldt.edu.
