Envisioning Commencement Group Formation and Update
There is a new commencement planning group which has been formed called “Envisioning Commencement”. The purpose of this group is to reflect and plan (based on faculty, staff, and student feedback) how to engage in continuous improvement with our commencement ceremonies.
The membership on the committee includes:
Rosamel Benavides-Garb, Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Brandon Browne, Department of Geology
Jenn Capps, Provost’s Office
Shannon Collert, Office of Advancement
Eduardo Cruz, Associated Students
Mike Fisher, Administrative Affairs
Mark Johnson, Advancement
Lauren Lynch, Provost’s Office
Brandilynn Villarreal, Department of Psychology
Jim Woglom, Art Education and Senate
Shawna Young, College of Professional Studies Dean’s Office
There are a number of wonderful ideas that are being generated already and the group is focusing on the following three items first:
Piloting a return to Departmental Receptions (in place of College or All University Receptions) coming Spring 2025.
Increasing the presence of music and dance reflective of our cultural diversity (Spring 2025).
Including the department chairs or a faculty representative for the department in the degree conferral portion of the commencement ceremony.
More information will be coming very soon so please be patient and stay tuned. With regard specifically to the departmental receptions, guiding principles for organizing these receptions will be coming shortly from your dean’s office so please hold off on any formal planning until you have connected with your dean for guidance.
Have a great rest of your week.
Jenn Capps
