February 14, 2024
Good morning and Happy Valentine’s Day!
Whether you celebrate the day, it’s just the midpoint in February for you, or somewhere in between, I hope you have a wonderful day. Please note there are two provost communications today. One “special edition” communication that is separate from this one outlines the Low Degree Conferring Metrics to Inform Action Planning and associated process communication and this one. Please look for that separate email. Thanks to each of you for your engagement and feedback.
The 10th Annual Authors Celebration: Today, February 14, 2024, from 3 pm to 4 pm
Please join the Cal Poly Humboldt Library as they celebrate over 800 authored works published by The Press at Cal Poly Humboldt during 2023! The 10th Annual Authors event celebrates alumni, emeriti, faculty, staff, and student authors today from 3 pm - 4 pm in the Authors Hall, Library 2nd floor. Come enjoy cake, sparkling cider, local cheese, and trivia. Hear about The Press at Cal Poly Humboldt and its goal to provide opportunities for every student to publish before they graduate. All authors are welcome to share their works during the open mic following the event.
The Cal Poly Humboldt Authors Hall, located on the 2nd floor outside of the Library Fishbowl, is a permanent, physical collection of books, articles, CDs, DVDs, and more, recognizing Humboldt faculty, staff, students, and alumni for their scholarship and creative work. The annual Authors Celebration reflects the belief in intellectual growth through scholarship, creative activities, and research, which is articulated in Cal Poly Humboldt’s values. Cal Poly Humboldt faculty, staff, students, and alumni can submit their works to be added to their growing database. For more information please visit the Authors Hall website.
Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) Employee Updates and Welcome
ODEI is also pleased to announce that Pearl Podgorniak has been named the ODEI Strategic Initiatives Coordinator. As the ODEI Confidential Administrative Support for the past two years, Pearl has demonstrated strong leadership and the ability to develop ODEI's purpose and vision into practices consistent with organizational and institutional priorities.
ODEI welcomes Angelina Ramirez Peirano (she/they) as Administrative Support Coordinator II and a member of the ODEI leadership team. Angelina graduated from Cal Poly Humboldt in 2022 with a Bachelor of Arts in Critical Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies with an emphasis in Ethnic Studies and a double minor in Religious Studies and Women Studies. During her undergraduate career, she worked with the student-run bilingual newspaper, El Leñador, as a news reporter and news editor, has interned at Cal Poly Humboldt’s Youth Educational Services and Green Campus, and, most recently, served as the TRIO Educational Talent Search office manager, helping empower local first-generation and low-income students to go on to post-secondary education.
CSU Extends Intent to Register Deadline Due to Federal Aid Processing Delays
The California State University (CSU) has extended the intent to register deadline for fall 2024 for new first-time, first-year admitted students to no earlier than May 15, 2024, in response to the further delays in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) processing announced by the U.S. Department of Education. This extension applies to each of the 23 universities in the CSU system. For more information, you can click the Online Press Release. Cal Poly Humboldt will likely announce an additional deadline extension once we have received final timelines regarding the delivery of the FAFSA information to campuses and updating the awarding systems.
Have a great rest of your week.
