December 4, 2024

Hello and happy Wednesday. I hope the first half of your week has gone well.

Well Done

The Information Technology Services (ITS) Research Support Team partnered with Wildlife Management faculty member Matthew Johnson and his student Fatime Jomaa on an innovative project to detect bird behaviors using Graphics Processing Units (GPU)-accelerated computer vision. Leveraging the donated NVIDIA corporation GPU servers and the YOLOv10 object detection model, we processed over 2,000 hours of footage, identifying key behavioral patterns and saving researchers countless hours of manual work. This collaboration highlights how ITS’s technical expertise and advanced resources can enhance and accelerate faculty research projects.

If you’d like ITS assistance with your research project, please contact us at itsresearchsupport@humboldt.edu.

Incentives Program for Faculty Research Grant Development

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs is excited to announce the launch of the Faculty Research Incentive Award Program! The program provides assigned time funding for the fall 2025 and spring 2026 semesters, or summer salary for summer 2025. Applications are due Monday, January 27, 2025, at 11:59 pm.

The purpose of the Faculty Research Incentive Award Program is to stimulate faculty members to develop and submit full proposals to external funding agencies and organizations for research and educational projects. Applications to develop full proposals on any fundable topic are eligible providing they seek to advance or promulgate the mission of Cal Poly Humboldt. In accepting an Award, a Principal Investigator (PI) commits to develop and submit a full proposal for external funding through the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs.

Applications from both single PIs and collaborative applications are welcome. Collaborative applications would be those involving faculty from across the disciplines that promote interdisciplinary, integrative research and/or educational initiatives and that include regional and disciplinary diversity. Applications seeking assigned time funding to develop new, previously un-submitted full proposals shall be considered; applications seeking assigned time to revise and re-submit existing proposals and/or Pre-Proposals shall not be considered.

ELIGIBILITY: All Cal Poly Humboldt tenured/tenure-track faculty, along with research associates are eligible to apply. For questions, please contact Erika Wright, Research Development Lead, at erika.wright@humboldt.edu.

APPLY: You can find more information and submit applications through Cal Poly Humboldt’s InfoReady portal, which is accessible through Engagement Hub.

Applicants who need assistance in identifying a sponsor are encouraged to visit the SPF website for funding resources (https://research.humboldt.edu/content/find-funding) or to contact the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs to make a Zoom appointment with the Research Development Support Coordinator, Cara Peters at cap924@humboldt.edu.
