August 28, 2024
Hello and happy Wednesday. The energy on campus is palpable and it’s wonderful to see the excitement on our students' (and employees') faces as the semester gets underway.
Presidential Search Faculty Committee Members: Be on the Lookout for a Call for Interest Coming Soon
While we are only three short days into the Fall semester and Interim President Spagna’s tenure, campus leadership is already receiving outreach from the Chancellor’s office to work with them to form the Presidential Search Committee for the National Search for our permanent president. Various campus leaders have been charged with filling key roles on the search committee. University Senate Chair and Faculty President Jim Woglom and I have been asked to facilitate an election to select two faculty representatives for the committee. Jim will be a third faculty representative on the committee as an ex-officio member in his role as faculty president. Jim and I will work with the University Senate to facilitate this election swiftly so stay tuned as more information is coming soon. If you have questions about other possible seats on the search committee, broader campus communication is forthcoming.
The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is Looking for New Members!
It’s been a while since there was a broad recruitment for new IRB members and the IRB has lost a few members from attrition. To keep the reviews moving swiftly we need your help in finding some new board members. Might you be interested?
Who is Eligible?
Cal Poly Humboldt IRB is accepting nominations and applications for faculty, staff, and community members. If you have an interest in social science and behavioral research and would like to be involved with protecting the safety and welfare of individuals who participate in human subjects research, this volunteer opportunity may be for you.
What is the Role of an IRB Board Member?
An Institutional Review Board is a committee of research experts and members of the community who review proposed research protocols to ensure that the rights of human subjects are protected and that the risk of harm to subjects is minimized. IRB Board members ensure compliance with Cal Poly Humboldt’s policies and procedures, federal regulations, and state and local laws relative to the review of human subjects research studies.
To Become an IRB Board Member:
Members must make a five-year commitment to serving on the Board.
Members attend monthly (hybrid) meetings during the Fall and Spring semesters.
The IRB typically meets as needed between 3:00-5:00 pm on the 3rd Friday of the month (see current schedule online).
Members participate in an initial training process, including CITI online training.
If you have questions about becoming an IRB member or need additional information, please contact the IRB office at irb@humboldt.edu.

ODEI Listening Circles Are Back: Thursday, September 5, 2024, from 11 am-12 pm
In partnership with Human Resources, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) Academic Personnel Services (APS), and Staff Council, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) will host listening circles for faculty and staff on the first Thursday of each month from 11 am to 12 pm throughout the academic year, beginning on September 5th. The listening circles will provide in-person and virtual options.
The intention of offering monthly listening circles is to provide a consistent forum for faculty and staff to engage in open dialogue, deep listening, and constructive rapport, where each voice is respected and valued. The listening circles are offered from 11 am - 12 pm to embed the opportunity into the workday as a symbol of institutional support for employee participation and well-being. Group conversations will be facilitated by staff from the partnering organizations.
If you would like to participate, please join us for the first listening circle of the academic year in person at the Library Fishbowl, Library 209 at 11 am on Thursday, September 5th, or join us virtually using the following Zoom link:
