Good morning and happy Wednesday! Events and celebrations are the name of the game this week as we have many cool and important events ahead. Here are a few:

Lamberson Ecology Lecture(s) tomorrow Thursday, April 18, 2024

This year's Lamberson Lecturer is Dr. Elise Zipkin, Red Cedar Distinguished Associate Professor, Michigan State University. Dr. Zipkin is a recognized expert in quantitative ecology, and her work has been cited over 5000 times by other scientists. The Lamberson Lecture series is made possible by a generous gift from Dr. Rollie Lamberson, emeritus math faculty and a recognized expert in mathematical ecology.

Dr. Zipkin will present two talks during her visit to Cal Poly Humboldt:

Thursday, April 18, 2024, at 4 pm in BSS 166 - joint Wildlife/Math Colloquium - "Solving Conservation Puzzles with Integrated Community Models"

Thursday, April 18, 2024, at 6 pm in WDFS 258 - public talk - "Why Are Monarch Butterflies Declining?"

The series is hosted by Humboldt’s Department of Mathematics and its name and funding from Roland Lamberson, Arcata, professor of mathematics at Cal Poly Humboldt from 1980 to 2004. Professor Lamberson has made substantial contributions to the application of mathematics to ecology and natural resources.

Assesstivus: Assessment for the Rest of Us

Join us on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, from 3:00 to 6:00 pm (program from 3:30 to 5:30 pm with food, drinks, and mixing before and afterward) at Baywood Country Club, 3600 Buttermilk Lane, Arcata, CA. This year’s celebration is a joint Cal Poly Humboldt-College of the Redwoods (CR) event hosted by Cal Poly’s director of assessment, Mark Wicklund, and CR’s assessment committee co-chairs, Amy Moffat and Jon Pace.

The agenda for the event includes:

• Short presentations by Cal Poly and CR faculty and staff
• Award ceremony recognizing assessment excellence
• Networking with Cal Poly and CR colleagues
• Refreshments (hors d’oeuvres, soft drinks, beer and wine)
• Prizes

Notes on Cure, Disability, and Natural Worlds with Speaker Eli Clare

Eli Clare is coming to Cal Poly Humboldt on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, in Founders Hall 118 from 3-5 pm to present his talk, "Notes on Cure, Disability, and Natural Worlds."

Clare's work sits at the intersection of disability, queer ecological thought, and the craft of activist writing. His work pushes against dominant discourses of "cure" in both ecological and social realms, and explores the ableist ways that ideas about "healthy" environments and "healthy" humans mutually reinforce each other, often to the exclusion of more queer ecological modes. This talk is being hosted by the Environmental Studies Department, and co-sponsored by the Departments of Critical Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, English, and Philosophy
