October 28, 2024

Good morning and happy Monday,

I hope you all had a terrific weekend. I’m excited to attend the CSU Graduation Initiative (GI) 2025 Symposium during the early part of this week with some of my faculty, staff, and student colleagues. If you are interested in attending the symposium virtually, register here.

Well Done: Congratulations to Wildlife Department Students

Congratulations to the Wildlife Department’s student quiz bowl team who finished #3 in the nation at the Wildlife Society meeting in Baltimore last Tuesday. The team members included:

Patience Brennan, Shawn Dauble (captain), Kaz Maddela Joseph Meihak, Daniel Meng (alternate), and Alex Lewis (coach/TA). We are so proud of you!

Well Done: Theater of War Production

It was great to see so many of you at the Theater of War production this past Thursday night. I really appreciated the intensity of the readings, the thoughtful and heartfelt dialogue following the readings, and the incredible facilitation of the event. Thanks to the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences for organizing and in particular Jeff Crane, Sara Hart, and Joice Chang.

URPC Budget 101 Open Forum Recording and Division Reports Save the Dates

Thank you to everyone who attended the University Resources and Planning Committee (URPC)’s Open Forum for the Campus Community this past Tuesday, October 22, 2024. The purpose of the forum was to introduce University budgeting concepts, processes, timelines, and the functions of the URPC and provide information on the state of the budget at Cal Poly Humboldt, the CSU, and the state. If you missed it, you can view the presentation here

Your next opportunity to engage with the URPC is coming up this Friday as the URPC will begin hosting a Divisional Budget Update Series to campus. As you may remember last Spring, the URPC asked representatives from each of the seven divisions to present to the URPC (and campus) about their priorities, plans for budget reductions, and likely implications. There was an ask at that time from the campus community to have divisions return in the Fall to report back on what reductions they actually took and what the current implications are. The schedule of divisional presentations is:

Friday, November 1, 2024

President’s Office (1:20 pm)

University-Wide (1:35 pm)

Administrative Affairs (1:55 pm)

Friday, November 15, 2024:

Academic Affairs (time TBD)

Enrollment Management and Student Success (time TBD)

Friday, December 6, 2024:

Advancement (time TBD)

Athletics (time TBD)

Campus community members wishing to view the divisional presentations and participate in the Q&A following each brief presentation are invited to join us via Zoom here. Looking forward to seeing you on Friday for the first set of presentations.

Spring 2025 Textbook Adoptions Due November 1st

This Friday, November 1, 2024, is the deadline for Spring 2025 textbook adoptions. Selecting textbooks by the deadline helps ensure our compliance with the Higher Education Opportunities Act (HEOA) through disclosure of course material information and that all students have access to course material at the same time. All print-based and other instructional materials must be accessible to students with disabilities at the same time they are available to any other student (EO 1111 and ATI Memo (March 2021)) to provide students with disabilities an equal educational opportunity to learn course subject matter, to participate actively in classroom discussions, and to meet assignment deadlines.

Submitting your adoptions on time also contributes to course material affordability by allowing our campus store time to source used and rental inventory, ensuring that our students have the most affordable options available for the first day of class. When adoptions are known before our end-of-term buyback event, we can pay our students top dollar for the materials they sell back and keep the affordable books circulating locally, allowing us ample time to research your requested materials and determine whether they can be added to our national network of rental titles, potentially lowering prices even more.

For more information, please see the attached Follett Discover User Guide or contact Chris Leach at 1268mgr@follett.com.

Faculty who would like to use or develop OER Open Educational Materials can contact the Library Sustainable Learning group for dedicated support at oer@humboldt.edu.

Have a great Monday.
