Good morning and happy Monday. Where has the semester gone? I can’t believe it’s already November.

 

Arts in Service Event: What’s Art Got To Do With It? Thursday November 9th, 2023

How can the arts help to bridge the gap between military and civilian life? How can the arts help civilians to better understand veterans’ experiences? What responsibility do civilians have to support veterans in their transition back to civilian life? Join the conversation during this year's Arts in Service event. Enjoy food, community and a panel including:

  • Jeff Crane (US Army), CAHSS College Dean
  • Joe Fox (USAF), College Corps Fellow
  • Ryan Jensen (USMC), Artist & Art Mentor
  • Ella Price, VA Whole Health Integration Nurse
  • Ehren Tool (USMC), UC Berkeley Ceramics Studio
  • Mark Walker (USAF) and Swords to Plowshares. 

 

Event takes place Thursday, November 9 from 5-7 p.m. at the Arcata Veterans Hall, 1425 J St., Arcata. “Arts in Service” continues with the 3rd Annual Veterans Day at McKay with the Community Connections Fair, a free, interactive, hands-on day of art making, live music, and BBQ Saturday, November 11, 2023, and other events. McCrone Promising Faculty Scholars & Graduate Fellowship Award Reception

The Office of Research & Sponsored Programs Foundation is pleased to invite you to Cal Poly Humboldt's 2023 McCrone Award Reception! The event will be held on Tuesday, November 14 from 4-6 p.m. at the Plaza View Room, 780 7th St, Arcata. To RSVP, please register via this link.

 

The McCrone award recognizes Humboldt’s junior faculty, acknowledges their potential in their field of research, and encourages their continued achievement. In addition, the Alistair and Judith McCrone Graduate Fellowship Award is given to one Cal Poly Humboldt graduate student to support their research. Each awardee will give the following TED talk-style presentations about their research interests:

 

  • Dr. Rouhollah Aghasaleh (Education) “Silence Breaking: A Story of Forgotten Bodies in the Classroom”
  • Dr. Oscar Vargas (Biological Sciences) “Unraveling the Origin of Our Rare Relatives”
  • Dr. Paul Michael Leonardo Atienza (Critical Race, Gender and Sexuality Studies) “The Promise of Intimacy: Queer Filipino Digital Desires”
  • Regina Khoury (Geology graduate student) “The 12 .5 ka Magmatic Flare-Up at Medicine Lake Volcano”

Letters of Nomination for next year’s McCrone Promising Faculty Scholars and Graduate Fellowship Awards will open the day of the award reception, Tuesday, November 14, and must be submitted electronically through Engagement Hub. Keep an eye out for the launch!

 

Spring Registration Drive in the Depot

Please help spread the word to your colleagues and students about the Spring Registration Drive. Drop-in help from Advisors from the Academic Advising Center (ACAC), Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), Cultural Centers for Academic Excellence (CCAE), Retention through Academic Mentoring (RAMP), and representatives from the Place-Based Learning Communities (PBLC) office, Registrar, Health Center, and Student Financial Services will be available at the Depot on November 6-9, 2023 and November 13-14, 2023 from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. See the attached flyers for details.
