November 27, 2023
Hello everyone,
I hope you all had a wonderful fall break and were able to enjoy some time to relax and spend time with those you love. As we head into the last few weeks of the fall semester I continue to be very proud of all we have accomplished and am excited to celebrate with our graduates at fall commencement.
Fall Commencement Information: Friday, December 15, 2023
Thanks to all of the faculty and staff who have registered to participate in the fall 2023 commencement. It means a lot to our students and a successful commencement ceremony isn’t possible without your help. As a reminder, there will be two commencement ceremonies held in the Lumberjack Arena. The College of Professional Studies and the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences will have a combined ceremony beginning at 1:00 pm. The College of Natural Resources and Sciences ceremony will be held at 3:30 pm. The decision to hold two ceremonies was to allow graduates the ability to include as many guests to attend as they would like.
A special shout out to our commencement committee who has worked tirelessly to organize a successful commencement. The most up-to-date information is posted on the Commencement website. Email grad@humboldt.edu with any questions and thank you so much for your contributions to making our graduates' experience incredible.
Engagement Opportunity: A Library and Social Work Collaboration to Support Research-Informed Practice
Amanda Dinscore, MS, MLIS (She/Her), Associate Librarian, and Debbie Gonzalez, DSW, MSW (She/Her), Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work will hold a virtual session entitled: A Library and Social Work Collaboration to Support Research-Informed Practice on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, 10:00 am - 11:00 am.
This presentation will describe an effort to address this challenge at Cal Poly Humboldt, where a librarian and social work faculty member conducted surveys and co-taught a series of workshops with students in their final semester of the Bachelor of Social Work program. Students learned how to find and evaluate non-paywalled information sources, understand and challenge information privilege and traditional scholarly publishing models, and expand their understanding of authority. Additionally, students applied what they learned to locate both scholarly, open-access research and non-scholarly information sources related to their practicum experience. An open pedagogy approach was then used to support the student-led creation of an online repository of these resources, the Humboldt Social Work Knowledge Commons, which includes annotations evaluating their usefulness to the communities they serve.
