March 20, 2023

Hello everyone,

I hope you had a wonderful spring break. Whether you had the opportunity to step away from campus and get some well-earned time off or you were working on-campus, business as usual, I hope the time felt meaningful and productive.

International Service Learning Program in the Philippines Over Spring Break

I feel very fortunate to have spent my spring break working alongside several amazing students, faculty, and staff on an International Service Learning Program (ISLP) class trip to Cebu, Philippines. Our students had the opportunity to deliver meaningful workshops to 11th and 12th-grade students at Sudlon National High School and learn about the rich culture in the Philippines. A smaller contingent of our group also had the chance to meet again with Cebu Technological University (CTU) to explore partnership opportunities.

The class was taught by Dr. Mateo Dean and included the following students: Starsong Brittain, Octavio Vergara, Marcus Bensen, Cynthia Luna, Matthew Gerber, Johanna Lanaro, Griselda Valdez, Alyssa Flores, Jason Arcilla, Carter Daniel, Jazea Smith. The trip also included Associated Students (AS) President Gio Guerrero and CPS representative Julian Pelayo Bracamontes. Our student representation was diverse ranging in age from 20 to nearly 80 years old with the majority of our students identifying as BIPOC. A special shout out to Cris Koczera, Amber Blakeslee, Donyet King, Associated Students, and the President’s Office for their support. This group is nothing less than exceptional. Well done folx. Well done!
