February 6, 2023

Hello everyone and I hope you had a great weekend.

Black Student Success Chancellor’s Strategic Workgroup Faculty Invitation

As many of you may be aware, the Black Student Success Chancellor’s Strategic Workgroup has been charged to provide a report to the new Chancellor that articulates key recommendations to support and advance Black student success in the CSU including, but not limited to, fostering a sense of belonging and wellbeing, addressing disparities in educational outcomes and challenging behaviors and dismantling policies that inhibit success.

There will be various listening sessions in this workgroup for faculty, staff, and students. There is a planned virtual listening session for up to five Cal Poly Humboldt faculty on February 9th from 4 pm-5:30 pm and will include faculty from all 23 universities in a focused discussion on how to advance and support Black student success in the CSU. The feedback provided by participating faculty will help inform recommendations to the new incoming CSU Chancellor. If you are interested in representing Cal Poly Humboldt please contact me at jec159@humboldt.edu by Wednesday, February 8th by 10 am so that I may forward your names to the workgroup and provide you with the zoom link. If I receive more than five interested faculty members, I will select a representative body of faculty across the three colleges. Opportunities for staff and students are forthcoming. Thank you in advance for your engagement.

Register for Spring 2023 Faculty Book Circle

Please join us for a fifth decolonial book circle for Spring 2023 with the Native American Studies Department and the Sustainability Office! This semester we will be reading Traditional Ecological Knowledge: Learning from Indigenous Practices for Environmental Sustainability, edited by Melissa K. Nelson and Dan Shilling. As with previous book circles, this one is an opportunity for faculty at Cal Poly Humboldt to remain at the cutting edge of sustainability, social justice, and community environmental research. All disciplines are invited to creatively engage with this challenge. The faculty book circle schedule is composed of 5 group discussion sessions held from 8:30 - 10:00 am on Monday mornings (beginning 02/20/2023). Participants do not have to buy the book, it will be provided!

Faculty will be asked to give their informed consent for participating as research subjects in summary findings from the book circle so that coordinators may produce and widely share lessons learned through University landscapes and Tribal nations. Space is limited, so please register by February 15 using this link. Questions can be directed to Dr. Kaitlin Reed at kpr29@humboldt.edu.

2nd CAHSSA Academic/Research Leaders Event: "Advancing Social Science Research: Strategies to Expand External Funding" (REGISTER NOW!)

CAHSSA is the California Alliance for Hispanic-serving Social Science Advancement (CAHSSA). It is a collaboration among the campuses of the California State University (CSU) and the University of California (UC) funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). CAHSSA works to align social science research initiatives with the Hispanic-serving mission of the majority of institutions of higher education in California through research and programs for faculty and academic leaders.

CAHSSA Academic and Research Leaders will be hosting an event “Advancing Social Science Research: Strategies to Expand External Funding,” with guest speakers, Erika Wright (Research Development Lead, Cal Poly Humboldt) and Bill Maurer (Dean, School of Social Sciences, UC Irvine). Each will briefly present the successful strategies and programming they have utilized to facilitate an increase of external grant-seeking in the social sciences on their campuses, followed by an interactive large-group discussion. This event will take place over Zoom on Thursday, March 2, 2023, from 12:00-1:00 pm. Please register for the event here to receive a calendar invite with the zoom link.

Thanks for all that you do for Cal Poly Humboldt.
