February 12, 2024

Hello everyone and happy Monday. There is a lot of activity on campus and the semester is clearly in full swing. I wanted to thank you all for your engagement in two very important topics over the past few weeks: the low degree conferring program process and beginning planning regarding the budget. Your feedback has been invaluable to our success in academic affairs. I will keep the communication and engagement on these topics coming and please be expecting some specific communication on the metrics that will inform action planning for the low degree conferring programs by this Wednesday, February 14, 2024. So stay tuned.

Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) Julie Alderson

Professor Julie Alderson was recently designated our campus Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR). The FAR is an NCAA-mandated position, which is appointed by the President and serves as a liaison between the athletics department and the university at large. While campuses must have a FAR, the FAR's roles and responsibilities vary widely across universities and are largely determined by specific campus needs. Julie will be reaching out for suggestions and feedback about how academics and athletics can work best together in support of our student athletes. If you have any questions, concerns or ideas, please contact her at jla19@humboldt.edu.

Well Done to The First Year Composition Program

Our very own first year composition program has won the 2023–2024 CCCC Writing Program Certificate of Excellence from the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) which is a constituent organization within the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). California Polytechnic University Humboldt is one of three programs to receive this award for 2023–2024. To be eligible for this award, programs must be able to: demonstrate that the program imaginatively addresses the needs and opportunities of its students, instructors, institution, and locale; offer exemplary ongoing professional development for faculty of all ranks; use the best current practices in the field; use effective, ongoing assessment and placement procedures; and model diversity and/or serve diverse communities.

College Corps is now recruiting for the 2024-25 Academic Year!

College Corps is a state-funded service fellowship program dedicated to fostering the next generation of civic leaders, creating debt-free pathways to college, and building working relationships between students and the larger community. College Corps offers students $10,000 toward education costs, a meaningful cohort experience, career and service leadership curriculum, and extensive opportunities for community engagement. Students are paired with local community non-profits, and complete 450 hours of service over the AY. We are proud to include AB 540 CA Dream Act Students. Encourage your students to apply! For more information, contact Sara.Hart@humboldt.edu or collegecorps@humboldt.edu.

Have a terrific week.
