August 26, 2024
Hello everyone,
Happy first day of school! I hope you have an awesome day. Thanks to all of you who attended the Academic Affairs Welcome Back and Professional Development Day. There was robust engagement and energy.
As part of the Academic Affairs Welcome Back, I talked briefly about the Division’s Five priorities this academic year as well as referred to a list of Academic Affairs employees who have arrived or departed since April 1, 2024. To view this information click here.
Thanks to Enoch Hale, Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning as well as all of the faculty and staff who set up the spaces, organized hospitality, facilitated sessions, tabled, and of course were engaged in the programming at Professional Development Day.
Community Engagement Team (CET)
One thing that was identified in the Time, Place, Manner (TPM) session was the development of a Community Engagement Team (CET) at Cal Poly Humboldt. The CET is a cross-functional group established to monitor, educate, and encourage compliance with university policies and laws, with the primary focus on fostering a peaceful, safe, and respectful campus environment.
The CET will support individuals through the free speech process in accordance with university policy and California law. The team will be composed of university professional staff, students, administrators, and faculty members, led by the Office of the Dean of Students. The CET will play a crucial role in monitoring outdoor free speech activities coordinated by students, registered student organizations, and campus visitors, providing support and guidance as needed.
A campus announcement should be out today illustrating how you may express interest in joining the CET so be on the lookout for the communication. I will work closely with the team to ensure there is representation from academic affairs on the team.
Curriculum Priority Deadlines
While curricular proposals can be entered into Modern Campus Curriculum (formerly Curriculog) at any time throughout the year, the following are the upcoming priority deadlines for processing for the 2025-26 catalog:
September 1, 2024: Proposal Originator to (1) launch and (2) approve proposals in Modern Campus Curriculum for Course Changes Only: New GEAR Courses, GEAR designation additions, and Course Changes that do not involve changing program requirements.
September 15, 2024: Proposal Originator to (1) launch and (2) approve proposals in Modern Campus Curriculum for New Degree Proposals (aka new Degree Projections) to be included with the Academic Master Plan submission in January.
Once a proposal is launched, it is reviewed by the Curriculum Analyst before it is advanced to the Department Chair and then the Associate Dean for College Approval. After receiving College approval, proposals are advanced into the ICC process (Diagram of ICC Workflow), and then to the University Senate for University Approval. The earlier the proposal is entered and approved by the Department Chair and Associate Dean, the earlier it can be reviewed by the ICC and implemented. Note that all proposals for the 2025-26 catalog year must be approved by the University Senate by the last meeting of the Fall semester in mid-December.
For more information about the types of proposals available, and the process for each, please check the Curriculum Forms & Templates website. You will also find a link to the self-paced training for Modern Campus Curriculum.
Please reach out to curriculum@humboldt.edu with any questions or concerns.
Athletics
As classes begin many faculty will be receiving information from our coaching staff and student-athletes about travel schedules and possible missed class time throughout the semester. While it is our students’ responsibility to work with you to ensure that they complete their coursework, please do consider how you can be flexible in supporting them. Our student-athletes represent Cal Poly Humboldt across the state and country, and helping them achieve their academic goals as they compete is central to their success. If you have questions about this or anything else athletics, feel free to reach out to your faculty athletics representative Dr. Julie Alderson.
Have a great day!
Jenn
