Women's Studies Certificate

Grounded in Gender Studies, the Women’s Studies certificate program is an interdisciplinary area of academia that focuses on the intersection of race, class, age, nationality, ethnicity, sexuality, and other aspects that shape political, cultural, economic and societal experiences in the developed and developing world. As the academic branch of women’s movements, Women’s Studies challenges assumptions upon which the Western tradition of scholarship has been based.

What you’ll learn

The curriculum for the Women’s Studies certificate focuses on analyzing gender as it is constructed within and through differences of race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, (dis) ability, and nationality. It enables students to interpret the diverse lives, issues, and voices of women in our multiethnic and transnational world. After completing core courses, students can complete the remainder of the certificate by choosing between more than 29 elective courses that range from Anti-colonial Women’s Movements and Queer Women’s Lives to Ecofeminism and Health & Body Politics.

Program highlights

The Women’s Studies certificate program is more in-depth than a minor, offering the opportunity to focus on a topic or sub-field of interest. This program can be particularly useful for students who want to pursue careers in counseling, social work, health care, teaching, human resources, or student affairs. It also helps prepare students for graduate programs in the humanities and/or social sciences.

Journalism, B.A.

Designed to prepare students for a career in journalism, broadcasting, public relations, or related fields, the Journalism program provides an understanding of the rights, responsibilities, and role of the mass media as well as contemporary media issues in race, gender, equity, law, and ethics. Students learn to think critically and challenge societal norms and narratives. Classes are small, and faculty have major media experience and strong ties to media professionals. Students can gain hands-on experience and build their portfolios by creating content for student publications and a student-run radio station.
