Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center

Fisheries Break-out Group

1.    ✓ Sustain and expand fishery cooperative groups based on Tim Mulligan and Laurie                  
           Richmond’s MPA models
           Response: These groups are currently funded on MPA projects for the next two years; after that we will look for RFPs and/or donor funds to continue support

2.    ✓ Study on local live fish fishery: transportation chain, role of holding facilities, local interest.
           Response: Several faculty are interested in pursuing a grant with community partners (Mulligan, Richmond. Tyburczy, Tissot)

3.    ⇒ Economic study on the valuation of locally-caught seafood
           Response: Some previous work done already and is ongoing (Steve Hackett)

4.    ⇒ Need to integrate fishery issues, specifically education on sea food, into ocean literacy curriculum
           Response: Will include in outreach material, teacher workshops

Aquaculture Break-out Group

1.    ✓ Human dimension study on the socio/econ/cultural aspects of locally grown vs. imported aquaculture products. Carbon costs included plus other benefits, not just costs.
          Response: Richmond submitted proposal to CSU Agriculture RFP; not funded but looking for another funding opportunity

2.    ✓ Foster better relationships between industry and the University through internships, fellowships, mentors from industry Sea Grant or Coast Fellows program
           Response: Tissot will pursue internship possibility with Humboldt; community members are encouraged to work with Sea Grant and/or CSU COAST fellowships programs to become involved
3.    ⇒ Need advocacy and research for local aquaponics industry. Role of invasive species, effects on eel grass.
          Response: Need more have faculty interest to move forward

Monitoring and Assessment Break-Out Group

1.    ✓ Continue to support and expand CenCOOS and Trinidad Line programs
          Response: Support is ongoing and several proposals developed for future work (Bjorkstedt, Abell, Tissot)

2.    ✓ Need better monitoring programs in place. Especially for eel grass in Humboldt Bay, role of ocean acidification and biotic interactions.
          Response: MPA estuary projects in progress (Shaughnessy, Mulligan). Will look for RFPs to continue support into the future, including GIS/Drone approaches.

3.    ⇒ Build capacity and collaborate with local tribes. Help establish marine programs (one model UBC First Nations Program http://fnsp.arts.ubc.ca/).
           Response: Important need for the region and a current Humboldt priority. The institute will work with programs on campus to include marine science. Will continue to collaborate with Tribes and increase number of collaborations. 

4.    ⇒ Study incidence and causes of PSP and HAB in steams and rivers.
           Response: Need more have faculty interest to move forward
