Student Learning Outcomes

Geology B.S. students will be able to:

  1. Effectively communicate geological concepts and interpretations in oral and written form to scientific and general audiences.
  2. Use the scientific method to collect, critically evaluate, and interpret geological data (e.g., geomorphological, mineralogical, geochemical, geospatial) in order to create models that explain Earth systems and cycles.
  3. Apply geology to professional fields.
  4. Evaluate processes operating at and beneath the Earth’s surface at different time scales and length scales in terms of how those processes create the Earth’s landscape and how humans affect and are affected by the processes (e.g., climate change, geologic hazards, geophysical and geochemical properties of the Earth's interior; their genesis and role in tectonics and magmatism).
  5. Effectively and respectfully work as a member of a team.
  6. Engage in behaviors consistent with high ethical standards and environmental responsibility.

Geology–Geosciences concentration B.A. students will be able to:

  1. Effectively communicate geological concepts and interpretations in oral and written form to scientific and general audiences.
  2. Use the scientific method to collect, describe, and interpret data from different disciplines to understand Earth systems and cycles.
  3. Describe the processes operating at and beneath the Earth’s surface at different time scales and length scales in terms of how those processes create the Earth’s landscape and how humans affect and are affected by the processes.
  4. Effectively and respectfully work as a member of a team.
  5. Consider the role of Earth scientists in society and the societal impacts of Earth systems and cycles (e.g., natural resources, climate change, natural hazards, land use).
