About Sydney

Why did you choose this program?

The Writing Practices program at HSU is like no other. Unlike other writing programs, Humboldt's offers in-depth publishing classes in addition to creative and technical writing. For someone interested in publishing, this is an invaluable opportunity that should not be passed up.

How did this program prepare you for your job?

As a Master's student of Folklore, much of my studies are centered around storytelling. Having a Bachelor's degree in Writing Practices has given me a pleasant foundational background in narrative structure. I refer to this background in every aspect of my current studies.

What did you enjoy most about the program?

Toyon! Not only is working for Toyon an incredible resume builder, it's delightfully fun. I'm so grateful that I had the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the publishing industry from the editorial side. I was able to create tangible pieces of work that I'm proud of. I've even brought my personal copies of Toyon across the pond with me when I moved to Scotland.

What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?

Picking a major is an important part of your college career, and sometimes you don't get it right the first time. I joined the English department halfway through my BA, and it was the best decision I could have made for myself. So, whether you're joining HSU and the English department for the first time or considering changing your major, don't be afraid to explore what the program has to offer. I can guarantee you won't be disappointed. In my experience, the staff and faculty of the HSU English department are incredibly kind and look out for their students. If you're interested in something they have to offer, reach out. You'll find many open doors that way.
