About Suki
Why did you choose this program?
This program chose me! I was living in San Diego at the time and wanted to experience living as far away as I could while still remaining in California. Although I was accepted to other schools, I found myself craving a unique environment. I truthfully had no idea what to expect, but was rewarded with an incredibly special program.
How did this program prepare you for your job?
Humboldt's program prepared me for being entirely self-sustaining. This program is what *you* make of it! Since Humboldt County is very isolated, I found myself emphasizing my own self-discovery. It is a wide open space with a lot of room to breathe, and I think that catapulted me into embracing my individuality. I wasn't copying popular "big gallery" trends because wasn't exposed to them. Instead I was cultivating my own special style. Professors at Humboldt give you a lot of creative freedom. If you are *already* dedicated to developing your art practice and seek the counsel of some very special teachers, Humboldt is the place. The faculty is incredibly empathetic and supports students in exploring their talents. Because I had so much freedom, I found myself.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
I enjoyed the small class size, empathetic art teachers, and strong sense of community. I learned so much about myself and what it meant to have a dedicated art practice. The honors painting program had endowed students with their own studio space, and that is something that not every university can provide. Having my own studio space prepared me for a world where I would have to buckle down and make my own career happen. The small art program made me feel that my teachers were available to me and valued me for who I was. They felt like friends who were there to support my wild ideas.
What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?
You might find yourself intimidated by the isolation of the vast redwoods. You might find yourself craving the convenience and opportunity of "big city" life. But you aren't a big braggadocious artist yet! Your art has value outside of a commercial landscape. You are growing constantly! Humboldt's art program invites you to slow down, develop your skills, and embrace the serenity of nature and community. As an alumni, I challenge students to engage with the local arts scene outside of the school and learn from the artists who are making a living in this truly special and unique place. You have so much growing to do and you didn't even know it! I would never have been prepared for the fast-paced and voracious Bay Area arts scene if I first did not learn what it meant to develop my own practice.
