About Sarah
Why did you choose this program?
I am a writer who initially wanted to pursue a career as an author, and I knew the English Department had an incredible literary magazine called Toyon. I wanted to be involved in that and learn more about writing and publishing.
How did this program prepare you for your job?
During my time in the English Department I became very interested in working in the publishing industry. Working with the Toyon was incredible experience for my resume and I was lucky to land a student position in both special collections and the HSU Press. My positive experience with the Toyon and the university press led me to pursue a professional graduate degree in publishing. After grad school I was able to use my experience in my current position.
What did you enjoy most about the program?
I loved the connections I made with the professors and other English majors. I still keep in contact with many of my English Department friends. Most of my classes were in Founder's Hall, which is a beautiful building—the most iconic building on campus. I also acquired my student positions through the program and these were responsible for my current career path.
What would you say to prospective students who are thinking about applying to this program?
This is a great program. The staff-to-student ratio is incredible. The professors know you as a student and go above and beyond to make your experience meaningful.
